Weights are great but long distance cardio will help, I would add longer cardio workouts in there. Put some miles on!

I hate running to but it's a great workout, I'm up to 3 miles and I'm one of those guys that is not built for running so it's a struggle. Just modify what you do to be more for cardio, longer sets, longer times

I would deffinatly add running to your routine. Go run on the days you shoot and don't run on the days you lift. You can do squats and box jumps and deadlifts till your legs are tree trunks but if you don't have the endurance training it can only take you so far. Also, it's great that you are practicing at 40 yards, but maybe try and step it back some to 60,70, or 80 yards. I try and practice for at least 1.5-2 times the distance I will plan to hunt to make sure that those 20, 30, 40 yarders are like making cereal, very easy. I must congratulate you though on getting in shape for this and practicing the way you are hope it all pays off for you!

I'll start running and doing body weight exercises in the next week, now that my commitments are all completed.

I know 40 yards isnt much for practice. I shoot at 85 yards on saturdays. I just dont have time to get to that clearing during the week. and i only have a 40 yard clearing at my house... Its all dense forest around my house, and the longest shot I have is a 85 yard straight section of a old logging road a few miles away. So i just have to deal with what i got during the week.

yea, I know what you mean. when i was running 60+ miles a week. i went all the way down to 190lbs. and i was as lean as i could be. took a tole on the joints for that one.... Yea i keep my reps on all my workouts high, and i keep the rests to a minimum. i make sure it keeps me sucking in air.

40 yards is still a good point to practice! Also may I suggest adding Glucosamine into your daily vitamin intake, it will do wonders for your joints and is cheap! Also it doesn't have to be a far run. Just maybe 5k or "around the block" which that may be 3 miles or 5 miles, but some running is better than none. Also may I also suggest you incorporate into your workout a good shoulder routine maybe shoulder presses, or simply taking a 10lb or 15lb dumbell and holding it in your bow hand and holding it at normal bow hold level and trying to hold it there for 20 seconds and than alternate hands and do the same with the other hand to help build those delts and upper back muscles. Maybe do 3 of 4 sets of these just to help a little.

I like to hit the 12oz. curls, Friday and Saturday nights especially. If I'm feeling super good I'll up it to 16oz. curls.. You know you get a good work out when you do as many as you can and you end up passing out. Sometimes I really feel it the next morning, which sucks..

I have a very bad back (two surgeries) so I struggle with running because it gets very painful. I do enjoy cycling though. The downside is it takes a lot longer to get the same level of cardio, for me anyway. If I jog 3 miles I feel like I am dying, but my normal rides are 15-20 miles usually.

Elipitical machine, if it gets too easy so it backwards. No need to abuse those hips and knees running.

Have you considered wearing a weighted pack when you scout? 45 pounds or so will make it a workout.

I would add weight training at least 3 days a week. Also, pack some things in a backpack and do some of your cardio/hiking with a loaded pack. This will help your endurance as well.
