I have been planting food plots for years. I have heard from some guys who mow their plots then after a week or two spray for weeds. After another week or two they disk and plant. I normally disk everything then wait till the weeds start in and then spray. This usually works well but I am wondering if mowing works differently. Two me, I am killing the weeds when I disk and then when I spray I kill the weeds I drag to the service by disking. In other words, I am killing double the amount of weeds and using less herbicide. Any ideas ?
Last year I mowed then sprayed before disking. This year I am going to mow first then disk and spray. I had a lot of weeds come back up through about a month after disking and planting.
Spray first. More surface area for your gly to stick and do its job. If you let it die and rot down for several weeks after the spray it discs up way easier.
I went and disked it last evening just as I did last year. In 3 weeks I will spray and 3 to 4 weeks after that I will plant. Should bring me to the end of July beginning of August. Mean Bean Crush and shot plot will go in together. Try something different again.
I typically spray, mow and then till on planting day with existing plots. I have a couple small new kill plots that I'm going to experiment with no till planting. Spraying and once weeds/grasses are dead I will seed and mow the same day creating a dead thatch over the small brassica seeds. This should hold plenty of moisture for sprouting seeds along with helping not to disturb the weed seeds in the soil.
It all depends for me on what we have going on. This year it has been wet for quite a while. We had rain every Saturday and Sunday for the entire month of May and so far this month it has been the same. This weekend it is supposed to be dry. We'll see. Still need to spray the weeds to get ready for planting beans. Yep, just a little behind this year.
