Opened the mailbox today and found a nice manilla envelope from the Kentucky fish & game. Inside was a letter:

Now for the crazy part....the letter was addressed to my WIFE! :(
After only 3 years of me putting both of us in, she drew an archery tag! I'm not sure which one of us is more excited (I think me). This will be a first for both of us....any one ever elk hunted Kentucky? I live about 5 hours from the elk area, so weekend scouting trips are a possibility. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Congrats! That's a hard tag to draw.
I've only hunted them out in idaho, but Rinella did an episode of Meateater on a Kentucky elk hunt (although it was rifle.) Should still give you a decent start of what to expect. I'm pretty sure he ended up taking his bull at near bow range using spot and stalk.

If they're not bugling in October, it should still be warm enough in KY to hunt them coming/going to water.

    Good luck!

Thanks I'll check it out. I was hoping we can use water to our advantage. I'll have to plan scouting trips to find some in the public land

They must have made a mistake on the name! I'm sure it was for you! ;)

Congratulations. It'll be a great experience for you two. My husband would be thrilled to be with me doing something like that! Guess she can't say you don't take her on vacation!

I called him today. He sounds like a pretty good guy. he explained a lot about the LEA areas, and told me about some coal company land I can get access to. Thanks for the tip.

Way to go. Any elk taken with a bow is a trophy. Good luck and keep us posted
