Trying to get some feed back and advice my first year of bow hunting is coming up soon and I was wondering how high should I be in the stand? assuming that I have good visibility around me. I usually use a "the higher the better" with rifle hunting but with angles of the shot and all in bow hunting how high is too high? any advice is very VERY appreciated guys

It really depends on the topography of the area you are hunting in and what suitable trees you have in the area. Myself I will not place a stand unless the tree trunk is wider than my outline, lucky for me I have some big old oaks so I can set my ladderstands at 21 feet.

High enough to be out of deers peripheral vision but low enough to still have cover from branches below.

I generally set up around 15' with a hang on for Gun and Bow.

I feel that 20 feet is plenty high.

18-22' is my normal height. I use a climber so Sota's technique is out the window, you can't climbs trees that big with a climber. I do like to have some back cover from branches or other trees.

Same here. Make sure you where a safety harness and use a safety rope. Hunter Safety Systems sells some great stuff. Do not get into a tree at any height without it.

I might have got lucky but last year I only had enough steps to go like 13 foot up and there wasn't much cover, and when I say that I mean there wasn't any branches on the tree I was in, just a few on the tree next to me. I had a nice buck come right in, stop and look directly at me while I had my pin on his chest. I just stayed still and he didn't even know what I was. I usually go about 15-19 feet.

The vast majority of my stands are in the 15-20' range. Depending on topography, the type of cover and position of the tree in relation to where I want to shoot that can change. IMO stand height is less important than having decent background cover and holding still. If you find yourself in a tree with little to no cover then higher is always better.

How do you get a ladder stand on something wider than you? Must not wrap around the entire trunk?

not around the entire trunk and I do not use the straps that come with the stand, I also use straps in 4-5 spots on the ladder up to the platform.

I use a climber and use bigger trees than most do with a climber. I think bigger trees are definitely an advantage. It might be kind of tough to get climbing in the beginning but not too bad. That being said, I'll hunt the tree in the best position.

Cover is better than height but I like to get pretty high in a tree. I rarely hunt much under 20' but let the situation and surroundings dictate how high to hunt

22 feet is my usual minimum anymore...unless tree doesn't allow. Will be hanging one this year at only like 12-15...gonna feel like I'm touching the ground :)

I usually set up around 15 feet but depending on the situation sometimes lower and sometimes higher. Generally 15 feet is plenty high.

It depends on your cover and background. I once killed a 145" buck from 8 ft up a tree. Other times I've been as high as 20 ft. Most of the time I'm at 15-17 ft.
