So I just got my first ground blind for turkey and this past Saturday I missed out on a gobbler that came in behind my blind. Since I bought the p.o.s. Club xl with velcro windows there was no opening a window after the fact. Any way I had the mesh halfway down on one window to shoot out of but it really limits your field of view. So finally my question. Do you shoot out of the shoot through mesh? And with what broadhead. I'm using Gobbler getters and Xecutioners and I'm worried they will open when hitting the mesh. Thanks for any advice.
No, I cut those stupid mesh windows out. I hate velcro, noisiest thing ever in the quiet woods. I only open the windows facing my decoys in turkey season, but if I need to I can unhook the elastic clip and open another window without scaring every animal in a 1 mile radius lol. I have a True Timber V1 but plan to buy a better one for next season.
I've never been a fan of the shoot-through mesh with expandable broadheads. Chances are there isn't enough resistance to open them up by why take a chance? If they're velcro I would personally cut them out and call it a day.
This is a great post because it just reminded me that we have a totally trashed blind in the woods still that the snow from last winter destroyed! Think I am going to pull out all the windows before throwing it in the trash and do some testing with different broadheads!
I always thought shoot through was for guns only not for bows. I shoot the rage 2 blades and they would open if I shot through the mesh. So I take the mesh out and only open the window facing the decoy.
I've shot a couple deer through mesh but I use fixed blade heads through TIGHT mesh. Works fine out to 30 yards. After that it may affect point of impact but I never shoot farther than that anyway. I'd never try it with a mechanical though.
I shot my turkey through the mesh... with a Slick Trick COC broadhead. Now that I shoot Magnus Bullhead's, I have the window full open / no mesh. I'd NEVER shoot a mechanical through a mesh window.
I actually shot through the blind just below the window the first time I tried. Forgot the sights on the bow were above the arrow. Doh! It did affect the flight.
Shot through my mesh window last season using the original Rage 2" 2 blade heads. ZERO issue. Granted the bird was only 13 yards out, but the arrow hit right where I was aiming, good 'ol Texas bulls eye.
So according to most manufacturers the mesh is meant for all types of broadheads and coincidently I just finished reading a article in Petersons Bowhunting magazine and they tested a bunch of broadheads and to my surprise the mesh didn't open a single broadhead but it did affect flight more on some heads than others. I think I'm gonna just upgrade to the double bull with silent windows but thanks for all the responses.
I shot my first deer straight through the mesh with a .243 deer rifle. Its not ideal circumstances, but hey it works. depending on the material of the blind, and they type of gun used, it may burn the nylon.
I shot my pronghorn through mesh two years ago. It was a fixed broadhead, 30 yards. Perfect double lung. She never even knew she was hit. Now that window is destroyed, though.
In my Rhino blind, I don't have the mesh up when I am hunting. I take it loose and keep it down. I understand the concept of the mesh, but I don't think it is necessary.
Well, I did it again. I posted earlier in this thread I shot through with Rage last year and this morning I got another Jake, shot through the mesh, and my Grim Reaper Hybrid hit them mark unimpeded. Video to follow...
