I received a phone call last night for the job I'm really interested in. They have a three step interview process. The first is a "Skills Test". It will include a typing test, use of Excel, and creating a newsletter from looking at a template.

I've never had to do a skills test before. The typing test I understand will just be typing to see how many words per minute that I can do. The newsletter should be okay, though no idea what program they would use. But, what kind of skills test would be involved with Excel? I know the basics of excel (simple spreadsheets, adding columns, etc).

Any of you ever done one? I'd appreciate any feed back.

    Thank you!

No idea what the job is for but I us excel all the time at work and it can do a ton of things. Basics like you said but I would guess make sure you know how to make graphs, tables, etc.,. Formatting different things and doing and understanding formulas.

It is for a secretary position at a local school district.

I will go look at Excel and play around a bit - I use it at work currently, but just the basic parts. Thanks.

I would definitely look at all the formula options and understand how to use them then. I would guess there would be a lot of that in a school secretary position.

    Oh, and good luck!

Thank you!! The job and hours is exactly what I'm looking for. Add in that I could hunt almost any evening is an added bonus to the already getting summers off.

    One can wish!

And formulas between tabs. Maybe pivot table. Graphs created from cells (possibly pivots).

Here is a slide show from PC Mag with some tips.

With excel you are limited only to your imagination in regards to what you can do with it.

Here is another decent site for learning how to use excel.

    http://www.excel-easy.com/introduction/formulas-functions.html

If they are using excel I would guess they are using Microsoft Word as well. For letter templates focus on page formatting such as margins and borders. There are also some templates that might help as well for letter and such that come with word.

Either way good luck and let us know how you do. :tu:

I just finished a whole textbook about excel at school, and got to the end and realized, you can do almost anything on it just by knowing the basics! Good luck!

Thank you all. I'll check those links out tomorrow after my turkey adventure!

I tinkered with it today, I still can't wrap my finger around all the types of formulas.

I'm going to brush up on Word, too. That's much more simple to use...just want to be confident.

Do you know if the (interview) person watches you or do you do it on your own?

It will be a time test based on key strokes. The test won't be on if you can do it, by how efficiently you can do it. Example would be, you can sum the column or you can enter =sum(A1:A12) etc.

This makes me nervous. I reviewed many things online. I think I am going to be okay - I just don't know what to expect. I know all of the basics, which I hope will help me get through. I can perform them all efficiently. I tried learning/reviewing the more complex formulas (if, values, etc) and they just are not sticking with me.

As a good friend of ours said "it is what it is".

    Thank you!

That was my plan - or tell them I don't know how but I am more than happy to learn it.

    Thank you Jerry, I'm trying!

I survived. I think I did what they wanted. Should hear something by the end of the week. (Oh and basics of excel was easily all they needed).

Thank you. I've never done a three step interview - so it is very nerve racking! The next step is an interview in front of a panel (which is May 21). I should hear if I made it to that step by the end of the week.

If not, I at least have a skills test under my belt and have an idea of what to expect.

I made it to final interview round! They are Thursday.
Going to brush up on Questions and gather the kind of answers I'd use.

    Thank you all!!
