Planning 2015 Elk hunt. Has anyone out there hunted West Elk Wilderness Area before? If so, any info or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Some good access into the unit we went in off Ohio Creek Road...not the easiest of terrain and unit does see some traffic

This is portions of unit 53, and 521. Unit 54 is closer to Ohio Pass Rd and Blue Mesa reservoir, south of these photos. Hope this helps you. HH

Also buy yourself a Colorado Atlas &Gazetteer see pg 57 and 58 published by DeLorme You can buy them in Wal-marts in Colorado, or from Barnes and Noble stores in other states or from Amazon.com/ You will also need some good Topo maps. BIG RUGGED Country ! Be in shape physically ! HH
George; Go to www.youtube.com/ in their search box type in: elk hunting West Elk Wilderness Colorado. There will be several videos come up on this, check them out, check out the muzzle loading hunt there,*** Colorado Packtrip/Elk Hunting by jjlovik * He is hunting in a very good area in the West Elk Wilderness and shows some of the surrounding mountains Sheep Mountain Kaufman Ridge. It is a horseback hunt. If you hunt way back in the Wilderness along Coal Creek drainage, you will need horses, actually almost all the hunts in the West Elk Wilderness will require long hikes on foot or horses. HH
