I have heard of using mud then letting dry for a day or 2 then wash off to get a stain on white antlers. Anyone have any experience with this?
I use Potassium Permanganate, Its a product I think they use in water conditioners. A little bit goes along way, its in a pellet form and you just mix with water. Then apply like stain in thin coats until you reach the darkness you want. The crazy thing about it is that its bright purple, but when it dries its a natural brown color. Its the best thing I have found to match color of natural antlers.
Pot Perm is toxic in certain concentrations so be careful if you use it. It's why many water systems are going away from it. Ours uses it still and it's getting tough to find.
I know people that use Old English furniture polish, they make a light and dark. For me it is untouched.
A light brown shoe polish works well also. When i did taxidermy work on broken tines or beams it worked for me.
This shed was found in mud and I think it had great color. I will say that I think the natural color looks the best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Please do I've got a set I want to stain also and mud sounds like the easiest option. I was doing a euro mount and set my antlers out in the sun for a month and they got bleached. Lesson learned. I'm curious how yours will turn out.
Ok thanks, look forward to seeing them. I plan to do the one in my avatar that I found the other day but the first round of mud didn't do much.
