BCY Trophy is by far the best I have used. Even tried the new X and like Trophy much better. That is just my personal opinion though. Sent from my Z665C

It depends on if the bow is FF compatible or not. On some of my bows I use D97 on others I use B50. All have Flemish twist strings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Traditional bows that are FF compatible have re-enforced limb tips. The large majority were made prior to FF string material and can be severely damaged if it's used on them. Usually the maker of the bow can provide this information.
I have a few bows that are non-FF but I shoot a D 97 with padded loops on them and haven't had any problems whatsoever. One is a Jerry Hill longbow that's kind of a project bow. These bows are known for horrendous handshock and this bow was no different. I re-shaped the grip to make it a 2 1/8" straight grip, added a 12 strand D 97 with the loops padded to 20 strands. The bow literally has no shock, it's much quieter, and it stepped up the performance a bit...one of my best shooting bows. I've heard about it being bad for the bow, but I've never seen one instance where damage to a bow was attributed to a FF string. I do have a few vintage bows that I do use B50, and that's only because it works for those bows
I'm going to chime in on this thread instead of creating a new one. I have a lot of questions. My Father gave me his old Black Bear re-curve this past weekend. Its in need of a new string. It's a 60", 40#. I would really like to make my own string and have been researching everything I can to learn how. I think I can do the Flemish twist string and want to make my own jig. In researching the string material I read, when in doubt, use the Dacron (B-50?). I have been seeing a lot of Ads for the B-55. They say this is comparible to the B-50 with less stretch. Should I just stick with the B-50? I don't want to break the bow. I have also read where I should create the string 4"s shorter than the length so I'm assuming I will make a 56" string? Also, is a 7" brace height the right height? To achieve this, you put twists in the string until you get your desired height? How many strands do I use for a 40# bow. On my compound, I have a 29" draw. I read where it is 2 1/2#'s more per inch so I'm figuring a 42 1/2#'s. Lots of assumptions here but any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I like to make my own stuff and tune my own bows. I think I have gotten pretty good at it with my compounds but have never tried making strings for those. Maybe later.
Most of the Guys here gave good info. If the bow has reinforced tips use whatever material you want. If it does not you should use B55 or B50 because it stretches and allows the now reinforced tips to flex and not to stop dead and could possibly shatter. Some have used other products and had no issue but that would be up to you. Hutch
I use B-50 on my older bows and it works fine. I think 12-14 strands will work but I'd suggest a brace height closer to 7 1/2- 7 3/4 inches. Many times your draw will be shorter with a Traditional bow than with a compound.. depends on the person. 56 inch string should work…. sounds like you're off to a good start. If you have any problems with the flemish twist string just come back and ask any questions you might have…
