I don't post much on here but spend a fair amount of time lurking and reading all your stories and posts about your trophies. After 6 years of hunting, I was finally blessed with harvesting a buck last night and here's my story. I started the weekend early taking Friday off to hunt. That morning I passed on a 2.5 year old 8 point that stood broadside for over a minute near my stand. After he walked off I started to question if I should have taken him for my first buck. Didn't see anything worth shooting the rest of the day. I spent Saturday morning doing yard work and was itching to get back out that evening. It was pretty warm as I headed out and I neglected to layer properly. The wind was horrible, so I was getting pretty cold and wasn't seeing anything. I had just texted my wife and told her I made a mistake and should have stayed in. I was pretty much done when I turned around and spotted a buck out in the neighbor's field. My heart started to instantly race and grabbed the binoculars. I couldn't hardly keep them still enough to get a good look at him, but knew he was a shooter. He started heading my way and I noticed he was limping a little. He came straight across the field right to my stand and turned broadside at 23 yards. I wasn't drawn yet as I wasn't sure what path he was going to take. My stand is just above the fork of a tree so I would have had to let down if he went past that shooting lane. So I slowly drew and he looked up at me, but didn't flinch. Even though I was shaking like a leaf, I let the arrow fly and delivered a perfect shot right behind his shoulder. He turned around and headed back across the field. He looked like he was stumbling a bit but I didn't see him go down and he walked into the woods. I called my wife and told her the news. I got down and checked out my arrow. It was covered in good blood, but there was almost no blood trail. I started to panic. I was confident in my shot (or at least thought I was) so I decided to slowly walk across the field to the edge of the woods to see if I could spot him. I was super nervous about doing this as I was afraid to bump him. I was ready to back out if I didn't see any good sign. I took two steps into the edge of the woods and saw him laying to my right. What a sigh of relief!!! He is my first buck and I'm very happy with him. I've never scored a buck before but I came up with 126 5/8 if my measurements are correct as a typical 10 pointer. Awesome buck, congrats! My daughter has the same boots lol. Any chance of you turning her into bowhunter? My 3 year old and I watch BHOD together. She shoots a little nerf bow at "deer" and gets blood on the arrow to show her mother, who's thrilled I'm sure Gotta get em young. Again that is a great buck!
Great buck, congrats. That buck has to be bigger than 126. You may have forgot to add a measurement such as the inside spread. Check the measurements again.
Congrats on a great buck, waiting a year for your first post paid off Agree with everyone else, no way that's only 126. Think Greg may be right, did you put the inside spread in either the tip to tip or greatest spread? Its the only spread that contributes to score.
Well, look at you setting that high bar! That's an incredible first buck, congrats! If score means anything to ya, I agree with everyone else..my first impression is the measure is off by quite a bit. If nothing else, I'd hate for your mental scoring/comparison experience to be skewed from it.
