It's deer season. If you found a 10-point buck stuck in a hole, what would you do? Would love to hear some of your opinions. Thanks! Whitetail Deer Rescued From Iowa Sinkhole ? (video)
I would try to rescue it as well. If it was during gun season I might change my mind though but still probably rescue.
Wow, that is totally awesome! But isn't it dangerous too? I mean, these are wild animals ... they can hurt you if you get too near, that's what I have been told. Well, I am new to hunting and learning as much as I can. Thank you!
I probably wouldn't know what to do or how to do it myself. Will have to call in some friends to help, and not sure if they would rescue or shoot the buck. It's a nice looking buck. That's why I am trying to figure out if there is a right or wrong thing to do. Thanks!
Nice young deer, I would have went and got the backhoe and dug a ramp out of the sidewall and let him climb out. To each his own but I'd have seen shooting him as both unwise from a management standpoint and also unsportsmanlike considering his position.
I wouldn't even consider shooting him. I'd do whatever possible to help the guy out. This wouldn't change if he was 6 y/o and 180". I couldn't look at him on the wall and be proud of it.
That's a good solution to free the deer without getting near it! I guess I'm beginning to see the point that it's not right to shoot a trapped deer. Maybe if it was injured, with a broken foot ?? Would that change the circumstance?
Deer aren't horses, they can survive quite well with a busted leg. Sometimes they heal okay, sometimes they don't but often the deer survives and functions normally in spite of it. Check out this deer I've been tracking since last year. He's survived that way ever since I first saw him and he gained antler this year.
I have freed two does that got mixed up in fences over my years but the trama and exhaustion took its toll and both died a short time later.wierd how you go from deer hunting one min.then trying to save a animal the next.
Exactly my thinking! There is no way I could kill one that is stuck in a hole, very inhumain and unsportsmanlike. I would do everything I could to rescue that deer
If i shot one that was incapacitated in any way, the fair chase element would be gone...a trophy is a representation of the hunt..the pursuit....a big rack gained in any other way is just a souvenir. I would however put the deer out if it's misery if it was injured to the point where i didn't feel it would survive if rescued. ...i would keep the rack too, if it was a nice buck...but i would tell people the exact circumstances behind it. The largest rack in my living room (186" typical) i found dead while shed hunting....when people ooh and ahh over it i tell them i found him dead...i have no desire to make people think i killed him. Just doesn't mean the same to me. I'm prouder of my first 120 class buck i killed than of the net booner i found
Thanks for the replies! I know what to do now if I ever encounter something like this. Try to help it but do it in a safe way.
I agree with the "couldn't look at it on the wall and be proud of it" post! That isn't hunting.. which takes it out of the Sport category and makes it inhumane.. in my opinion.. I know a lot of tree hungers say that us hunters don't give the deer a chance but we have all missed or had a deer duck an arrow, So if you recue him then he atleast has the chance to survive and duck an arrow.. Good question, fun post!
