The hitch haul basket almost done

I said in a post a while back where I made the bow rack that I was going to make a basket to haul deer. Well, after actually using the hitch haul without a basket, I decided I needed the basket done so I stayed late and got it all done except painting.

 

Tomorrow I will paint and put a couple straps to tie it to the rack to keep it from sagging with weight.


Some might be wondering what the plate is. I made a heat shield to keep the deer from cooking because I have aftermarket exaust and it gets pretty warm.


I also left one end open so I can haul a deer into it by myself if need be.

 

Haha, hey that's pretty sweet! Last year I shot a buck off the home farm and had to load that big sob in the truck bed alone. Had it not been for some creative use of about five ratcheting straps, I'd have had to find a different means of packing him out, lol.

That's a great-looking box, and the heat shield was a neat idea.

 

Just had a friend on Facebook warn me about mud covering the deer. He has a basket hanging off his back rack that gets covered.

I have a piece of coal mine belt that I'm going to line the bottom with and screw into the front side.


I knew I needed a heat shield after putting my son's stand on the rack and it melted the plastic knob and the straps to the seat.

I fixed his stand with left over strap material.

 

But that is a good problem to have.

 

Depending on how difficult it is to load a deer by myself, I could make a hinged gate that will lower to the ground to slide the deer up into the basket but I don't think it will be necessary.

 

Will that much weight behind the back wheels cause the front end to come up? Going up hill I mean? Looks good though.

Not enough not to be able to get the deer out. This bike is heavy and has the weight distributed well.

If it becomes an issue, I'll just put 50# on the front rack to offset it. But i don't think it will be necessary.

 

My 700 king quad has a ball on it and I hook it to my 13' trailer and load it pretty good, way more than a deer would weigh and have no problems with a light front end. Single axle trailer so it would swivel enough to lift the front end too. The IRS will definitely squat though.

Got her painted today and made straps.

I'm thinking about using some black indoor outdoor carpet to line it to keep mud off deer. Was going to use rubber but it's too expensive.

 

And it's done.

Found a black utility runner that worked great.



Rode around with my son in it and yes it does get a little light on the front with 195# in it but it is manageable.
