Just put in for my Iowa tag. There is only a few days left to put in for your tag or preference points.

I am getting my 3 point, with KS and TX on the menu I don't think I am going to try to draw Iowa this year.

Got my 2nd or 3rd point purchased May 3rd! Hoping to apply for archery next year. DIY public land most likely. Scouted some great looking public land in NE part of the state.

Good luck with the gun hunt Tom! I hope you do not encounter another blind buck (unless that is what you are looking for) even though that was some great video footage.

Next zone west of me. If not too far and you tag out early, swing over.

Does someone mind explaining the points and all a little to me? I know Im to late this year but would like to hunt Iowa in the next 5 years or so. Whats the best way to go about drawing a tag? And how far in advance do they tell you if you draw, so you have time to save and plan for the hunt and all?

Generally you need a couple or more points to draw an archery tag in most Iowa units as a nonresident. Firearms tag are generally easier depending on the unit.

You get points one of two ways. First you put in for the drawing for a unit. If you don't draw from the lottery then your awarded a point that carries over to the next time you put in for a draw.
The second way is to just buy a point without drawing.

So a good staring point is to purchase a point. Then starting the following year start lining up your hunting plans, figure on drawing your third or forth year.

Keep in mind what is said is generalizations, you can get extremely lucky and draw on the first lottery your in pointless, however the odds are slim.

Also keep in mind that of you draw you own the tag irregardless of if you hunt. So unless your really sure you can make the trip ...just buy a point till you have all your ducks in a row.

Awesome. I think this is my last question...if I buy a point is it good for all units till I put in for the lottery or do I have to pick a unit when I buy a point?

    Points are not unit specific.

You can still buy a point this year. The deadline is Sunday.

According to DNR, for Zone 4 you can usually draw a tag every other year. For Zone 5 you need two preference points before applying for a tag. Don't know about other zones.
