I'm kinda hesitant about going... My friend assures me that it is just for people that were raised in the church, and while they have since left the church/religion, still miss the communal aspects of church. I don't think they actually call it "church". If this is true, I could see the appeal. Getting together with like minded people is always a good time. ...but I'm also kinda afraid it might just be a bunch of neckbeards talking about how smart they are, and while that is cool, it doesn't exactly appeal to me.
Seems a little counter intuitive. What exactly do they do there? Sounds like a mutated AA meeting to me.
My guess is you will get both. I'm sure different people have differnt reasons for going there. Some will try and prove how smart they are. Some would be in it for the same reasons you would be.
And the preacher stepped up to the pulpit and said................................................................Nothing
I don't think there are any "preachers", more like just guest speakers on certain topics this is where I was invited for those interested Houston Oasis
Since you referred to it as a "church", I just used the common term for the person who speaks at church.
So it's just a bunch of like minded people getting together, right? If you are like minded then go, if not, don't. Do you want us to help make up your mind or just talk about atheism? I don't get it.
I don't know. Thought it was an interesting topic because: 1) I didn't know such things existed 2) ...maybe someone here has actually been to one?
I didn't know they existed either. Seems to be just a gathering of friends, not sure what they would even talk about so it sounds like a waste of time unless you know them and have something in common other than not believing in something.
I'd go just for the knowledge and experience regardless of ones beliefs. I like having first hand knowledge rather then what is written in a book or online.
If you take religion out of a church then you are just left with like minded people and a building for getting together. I would go to a concert, bar, etc. you'll probably have more fun.
So does this mean you have to go to church to have faith? Some of the most religious people I know would never set foot in a church do the "commercialization" of it.
Interesting thought about this. Typical churches invite non-believers, and (hopefully) show them compassion. I wonder what would happen if a Christian showed up to the atheist gathering (or whatever it's called), would they actually be tollerant and listen to the Christian about their beliefs or why they believe in God?
I can only answer for me, but I would be respectful and tolerant as long as they were respectful and tolerant.
Sounds like a setup! If they start mixing a batch of Kool-Aid don't drink it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
