I am heading to elk hunt this coming September, and was curious of which broadheads you use on elk. I currently use 100 grain 2 blade rage for whitetails, but will be using a fixed blade for the much larger elk. Your input is greatly appreciated.
100 grain fixed blade is fine. Montec, Hellrazor, Muzzy. Study lung location, stay away from shoulders. Enjoy.
I don't know why you can't use a rage on a elk. I used it on a 2200lb water buffalo at 40 yards. Google what there rib cages look like. Ribs are like 2x4 lumber. Rage did a awesome job. A 2" hole will kill a elephant or anything smaller faster then a 1" hole no matter where it's placed it's just logic. And when people say expandables don't open on heavy hide animals. That's ridiculous old school thinking. With modern bows flying faster then 300fps a field tip will go right through a animal let alone any type of broadhead. I don't get the logic behind rages only being for deer.
Some states don't allow expandable BH's for elk.... I've shot the 3 blade 100gr Muzzy's before with good success.... Any of the BH's mentioned above would work great.... Muzzy's, Montec's, Thunderheads, Hellrazors, etc...
Thanks for the responses. I feel like a Rage could definitely kill the elk, but I feel more comfortable shooting a fixed blade. I have shot Muzzy's and Thunderhead's in the past but being a rookie to elk hunting I wanted some outside advice. I am going with a couple of guys that have hunted out west for years so I am getting advice from them as well. Thanks again.
I'll be using Muzzy Trocar this year on elk. Very impressive head. Solid and sharpest blades I've seen.
This will be my first archery hunt this coming September also. I'll be in Wyoming for elk and my broadheads will be Slick Trick Magnums in 100 gr. Hopefully I can report back with a result. Jeff
I'll be shooting the slick trick standards for elk this year. I wanted to shoot the QAD Exodus but can't justify spending the money on them over the slick tricks.
Matter of opinion here but as already mentioned check the rules as some states do not permit expandable broad heads. personally I shoot a fixed. The hide of an elk is as thick and tough as a roof shingle...

As stated, any of the fixed heads about will work great. Shot placement and angle are critical. I've personally used the 100 gr 4 blade Muzzy and a couple of my buddies like the 100 gr 3 blade. One in our group prefers the Slick Trick and they have all done well when placed in the right spot. Good luck on your hunt.
