I''m back in Colorado chasing the Elk this Fall, this time I'm hunting opening week with my Longbow or Recurve, who else is chasing Wapiti this season??
I might be if I ever get to Utah. And I figure out how to get a tag (I think I might be able to get a cow tag or spike tag?). From there... I have no idea how to hunt elk. I'll probably fall down the mountain and get eaten by a lion. :D
I'm going with a guide this year up near Hayden, CO Sept 7th -11th. May try to get by unit 45. Where are you going to be? Trying to get a group for unit 45 again next year.
Im hoping to get to experience ALL kinds of hunting this year since I am so interested in Archery and just bought a bow to get into it
Heading to Idaho in Sept. 2 of us from Iowa will have compounds and one of my friends from Oregon will have a long bow or recurve. None of us have been elk hunting. DIY land. No guides. Planning on backpacking in quite a few miles hoping to get away from people. Hoping to at least get to interact with the elk. If one of us can get one I would be really happy. Never seen one up close and personal.
More than likely Soda Springs area or SE Idaho. SE Idaho mainly for less driving from Iowa. One of the guys has camped out there scouting and saw a lot of people in the unit he went to. If we could draw a good unit than it wouldn't matter where, but with the draw we will still try to focus on Eastern part of state. If we don't draw then we will go with OTC. Subscribed to Hunting Fool magazine and still waiting for the Idaho issue. Hoping it is in the May issue where it breaks down some of the better units for bigger bulls. None of us have ever gone elk hunting before so we aren't expecting world class bulls and would be very happy with any bull. I'm not against shooting a cow either depending on how far we are in and what day of the trip it is. Any suggestions are more than welcome?
