Okay my friends wife caugth this fish. It kind of looks like a freshwater drum but the tail is pointed and forked. I thought it was a black buffalo but The fins and eyes aren't right for that. Does anyone know what it is. Caught at Lake Jordan Alabama.
Well, I feel dumb. I have caught hundreds of drums over the years. From the picture, the tail just doesn't look right and the mouth looks a bit large. Also it looks a bit poor as they are usually quite a bit thicker than that. Could have just been the camera angle. Anyway, thanks everyone.
Don't feel dumb. I see a lot of funky looking fish. We have a bowfishing tournament were we allow buffalo but quillbacks don't count. Then people started bringing fish that looked like crosses between buffalo and quillbacks... lo and behold, they do hybridize! Smallmouth buffalo, black buffalo and bigmouth buffalo hybridize too. Silver carp (the jumpers) will cross with bighead carp (non-jumpers), the result is a fish that porpoises (and has funky gills). Add to the fact that the bigger the fish, the weirder they can look. The fish in your picture looks like an older fish in poor condition. Finally, I know there's something called a red drum that has a slightly different tail and body shape than your standard freshwater drum. (that's about the extent of my red drum knowledge) I don't know if red drum are even in lakes.... but maybe they are, maybe they interbreed with regular drum. ????????? :D

It actually is. The northern name for them is a Drum, sheepshead is more the southern species. Up here they are just Freshwater Drum
Got a Master Angler Sheepshead back in July, Lol Nothing to be too proud off, But I would say Sheepshead/Drum

^ thats what i mean about the difference. Search "Freshwater Drum" and you will see the same fish as in the OP's picture
