Lots of cool space stuff happening today: First, a meteor "blew up" over Russia this morning: The sonic boom is at 27 seconds. It's loud as hell and awesome: And today at around 1:24 eastern, the asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass by the Earth at approximately 17k miles from Earth. Pretty damn close.
That is wicked. It will be interesting to see how big they figure it was. Side note: Have you ever heard a sonic boom? I was walking through the woods at our cabin in 2001 when I heard an insane loud boom and the shockwave damn near knocked me off my feet. Then a few seconds later, another one. I looked up and saw 2 fighter jets hauling ***. It was pretty intense.
The last large asteroid that struck Earth blew up in the lower atmosphere over Russia as well. About 100 years ago or so. It supposedly displaced more energy than 1,000 atomic bombs.
So say that asteroid isn't 17,000km away and is instead heading right for us. Is there anything that can be done, besides call Bruce Willis and his crew (they have experience in these matters you know) or are we simply SOL and it would hit us?
I couldnt sleep early this morning and every news station around 3am was going crazy about this story. Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah me too, I was up cuz I couldn't sleep, happened to see this and that was all it took, up all night! Sucks for me a 12 hour day to boot! Ugh! Pretty cool stuff for sure!
Yes....sometime soon after 9-11. A couple of jets were scrambled (security was so tight) between me and Chicago. It shook my windows. I thought the house was going to fall over.
