i just did another hr or so of shooting and my last 9 shots i decided to hold the bow with firm grip, kinda trying to hold it in a fashion to not torque it and one thing i noticed is i was able to focus on my target much easier then using the open hand. im not sure if its because my muscles are clinching around the bow and holding it more steady or what, but my last 9 shots were at 30 yards, and each set of 3 arrows had 2 of them " tink " eachother as they touched when they went in the target. i did about 40 shots and my arm was shaky, and it was windy, kinda curious how tight they stay when im fresh and take those first couple shots:p so who does what? and why? thanks guys!!!!
open handed shooting works better for me. Its personal preferance. if you shoot alot you will find which way works best for you
I shoot open handed. I find that I do torque my bow when gripping it. Just a matter of practice and finding that grip that works for you. Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
Don't worry about open or closed. Just make sure it is a relaxed grip. Fact is, a hand that is held open is usually tense. Tension is bad. Just let the fingers hang loose and make sure there is no tension in the palm. sent from my samsung note 2
i think a lot of people that hold the 'open hand' style, force their hands open causing tenseness and change the natural shape of the insid of the hand...which is what exactly what you want to avoid... i shoot with a relaxed hand, with my fingers kinda hanging. a lot like ohbowhunters pic. i think the goal is to use a comfortable grip, that is relaxed and not causing torque, that is repeatable every time. every one is different, and you need to find what works for you. i have coached several people that were using the open hand method, that were actually forcing their fingers strait, and causing tension...you should be as relaxed as possible when you shoot.
This ^^. Relaxation in your hand is key to reducing torque. For most people I would say that their hand is neither completely open nor closed, it is somewhere in between.
Closed hand with a loose grip. If I open too much or close too tight my shots get erratic. As long as my hand is pretty relaxed I shoot pretty good.
well i cant explain it, but it seems like if i have a closed hand but not gripping the bow, it feels the smoothest and most comfortable
Another vote for the OHbowhunter grip style. I think one critical element to having a relaxed grip is the use of a wrist strap-very important for new shooters to get the idea that they are not going to drop the bow after the shot. I used to be an open handed shooter and developed a habit of grabbing the bow after the shot-even though I used a strap. For me, going to the grip OHb shows ended that bad habit quickly.
I use a open grip like ohbowhunter except I close my middle, ring, and pinkie finger so they are between my palm and grip.
