When asked what I wanted for my birthday...I said...I want to get my first Buck! Well, I got him...the day before. I headed up to the cabin Thursday night after work to get a jump start on the weekend, got up there just in enough time to get to bed so that I could get up early to hunt. I got up at 5am and it was pouring...so, I turned right back around and climbed back in to bed. The rain stopped around 9 and we decided to go scout some new areas. We were in the woods until about 2 before we headed back to get ready to hunt. I had told my bf that for my birthday I wanted him to come walk me out from my stand so that I could stay until dark, otherwise, I am chicken and usually getting out of my tree during "the best shooting time". So, that is what his plan was for Saturday night, which was my birthday. So, Friday I would just go sit in my stand until I got to the point I wasn't comfortable and head out before I couldn't see in front of me. I headed out about 4...got in my stand and settled around 4:30. Nothing until just before 6. I heard something come in behind me and I was expecting spike that hangs out around there. I didn't turn to look until he was to the left of me. I saw him and instantly my heart started pounding so hard I thought it was going to jump right out of my throat. I slowly reached for my bow and when he turned his head I drew back. I am not sure exactly how long I was at full draw because all I remember was trying to tell myself to breathe. It was a good thing I was sitting down because I swear I was going to pass out because I don't think I was breathing. All I could hear was my heartbeat. I remember gripping the bow so tight and thinking...ease up on the grip...find a place...breathe...and the next thing I know he jumped, kicked his hind legs and ran about 20 yards. He stopped and looked around and just fell to the ground. I do not even remember pulling the trigger on my release. I sat in my tree shivering for about 10 minutes with such an adrenaline rush. I managed to collect myself and get down from my stand and of course my phone doesn't get reception at any of my stands, so I made my way back to the cabin to get Dave. It wasn't even 30 minutes later that we got back and the wolves were howling. Dave did the dirty work, I helped him drag and we were out of there. The next morning we got up and Dave gave me my birthday present. He bought me the video camera I wanted and he had it all planned out. He had a really nice buck on camera at one of his stands, he set up another stand and was going to take me out there and video my hunt for my birthday. But, it was just a little too late. Next year!
That's just flat out all kinds a bad azz!! Congrats on a beast of a first buck! Oh and Happy Birthday.
