So I have a hunting situation this year where I have to shoot two does before I can shoot a buck. Almost every doe on my trail camera has a fawn with it, believe it or not. I have a ton of pictures of a herd of five deer - two does and three fawns. At least one fawn still has spots. I just can't bring myself to shoot a doe with a fawn following it. My season opens on September 15. When are these fawns going to split off?
sometimes a doe will have new fawns and lastyears fawns(does). but the young bucks will usally be gone around a year old. Does sometime will be together for years.
In my opinion if you have several does hanging with their fawns the fawns will do just fine if you take a doe out of the crowd. They aren't depending on the does for nourishment any more. They will learn what they need to from the remaining does and herd at this stage of their life. Don't give up an opportunity to hunt the bucks by holding out for the loner does. Good luck!
If you have a soft spot for fawn, then don't shoot a doe with fawns becuz the fawns won't leave the corppse. Happened to me twice so don't shoot them anymore. Just doesn't seem right.
Buck fawns will be kicked out prior to the rut. Doe fawns can hang with mom through the rut and often spend the winter with mom. When you start seeing young deer killed on the highways in the pre-rut you'll know when, as most of them are buck fawns kicked out and are looking for a new home.
