Has anyone every used "shed traps" after season to get more sheds in one spot? I am new to the idea of shed hunting and have small properties but would like to get some sheds of the deer I have been getting on camera.
You're a few months late buddy. Bucks are dropping velvet right now not antlers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I use ^ this by making a loop around a tree with one bungee, and then connect the others in a pyramid shape up to it to create a semi-circle around the tree.
Oly44 I was referring to this coming season No.6 hunter I was thinking the bungee style would be the best way opposed to he chicken wire or any metal wire. I was just trying to get some feed back on styles and idea's like I said earlier my properties are small and finding sheds the traditional way would not work, its more of a pass through area.
Make sure it's legal in your state to make a shed trap of any kind. Safest would probably be a couple square bales making a triangle with corn or something inside for them to want to stick their heads in it. If you want more land to check, start walking public!
What about a box made with 2x4s and a open space in the middle for the food? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Some people are not getting the reason I started this Thread, Its not about being lazy and not wanting to walk and its not about just finding sheds. I want to get the sheds of the deer I have been getting pictures of and as previously stated I have small pockets of properties I hunt therefore I wanted to get Ideas on shed traps. I think it would be neat to have some previous sheds of deer to go along with the trail camera pictures over a time period leading to the harvest of a quality whitetail.
@ Midwest machine That is not a bad Idea , I have also seen where the fasten a rubber tire between two trees and put corn in the bottom that way when the deer try to feed they bump their horns on the rubber tire, nothing to get tangled in that way.
One thing I just thought of today is putting either a snow fence or just one strand of caution tape around food plots so deer have to jump to get in and out of food plots which could jar the antlers loose!? I don't know how effect it will be but it could help! I might give it a try next year if I have time. Also, it wouldnt count as a shed trap for the guys like me whose states dont allow shed traps
Not bad thought... be there are some game wardens who might challenge the idea just because it has nothing to do with agriculture or decor, but I'd give it a shot.
I would caution making anything out of wire, chicken wire or fencing that a deer could get caught on especially if the antlers aren't ready to come off. I've heard of using 3 hay bales, put two in the shape of a V and then one on top across the two to form basically an A. Put the corn up under the top bale. Also heard of putting feed under a big branch that hangs low to the ground, in and around a dead fall or big branches they could knock their gear on.
