I have never been hunting or know any who hunts.

When I buy my deer/turkey licence do the tags come with it or are those another purchase?

Are there any websites anyone could recommend to find private land to hunt for cheap or free?

Every state is a little different. For georgia you buy the hunting license and then a big game license which is essentially your deer and turkey tags.

That's another thing that makes this so hard. Each state Is so different.

I'm in virginia and it looks like I need.

    Hunting education course
    Hunting licence
    Archery tackle license
    Deer/turkey licence

In virginia you get one antlerless tag and one either sex tag. When I buy my deer license does that get me the tags?

I just quickly glanced at the regs for virginia and they have a game check system similar to georgia and your deer/turkey license should include tags. On the georgia big game license it comes with 15 slots for 10 antlerless, 2 antlered deer and 3 turkey. These slots are your "tags". When you harvest an animal you write it in a slot on the license and report your harvest to the dnr online or by phone. Hopefully someone from virginia will be able to chime in and give you some more helpful information

I have always found state game offices to be very helpful when I call. I have called several with questions when planning out of state hunts. Don't be afraid to search out their contact information on a website and give them a call. They are normally glad to help!

Also, some states have "walk-in" private lands, or private landowners that sign up to allow limited public access. Again, just call and ask. Good luck!

In Virginia you will need to buy your hunting license, archery license, deer/turkey tags and a bear tag if you want one. They are all separate. If you are a residence you can get the sportsman license that has all that included plus muzzleloader and freshwater fishing for like 133.

    Here is the break down:

    https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/licenses/

I get them every year so if you have any questions let me know and I will try to help as much as I can.

Also you get 6 deer tags. The county you hunt in does however determine if you can indeed use all six. What county will you be hunting in?

Dang I've been reading a lot of stuff had no clue you got 6. I'm going to need a bigger freezer. Or more friends. Guess I should worry about getting one first before I go down that line of thought.

I'm in Norfolk. The closest WMA in in chesapeake called Cavalier WMA and they have 2 tracks. The small one is archery only. My brother and I walked around them last weekend. Saw lots of tracks and seems promising.

Thanks for finding that link for me hope it wasn't to much trouble.

Does anyone ever camp at a hunting site the night before instead of driving there really early? Or is that just to much smells and commotion to be a good idea?

Every state I've ever looked up online had a digital regulations manual posted.

I was going to say that you should definitely spend some time on the dnr website. I've even called the game wardens and talk to them as well. Most states have a map that displays public hunting land. Another tool you will need is the onxmaps app. It'll show you public hunting lands in Virginia and has gps functionality.
