I was wondering if anyone here hunt the public lands up in the Adirondacks? Looks like TONS of public land up there with no roads for miles...just what Im looking for. Hows the deer population deep in them big woods? Hows the pressure in bow season? Just looking for some new adventures that wont break my bank, might be a cool area to canoe or pack in for a few days, camp out and do some hunting. Would think its not to hard to get away from the crowd with that much land and that few roads.

In short, except for some scattered pockets...it sucks. Low deer densities and very mature forests lead to lots of hours between bucks. Pressure is not a factor during bow season except around towns and devolved areas. Also keep in mind the the entire rut takes place during the general firearms season.
I cant see traveling to bow hunt in the ADK park.

Yeah i was kind of figuring that. Was hoping it would be different deep in them big woods though. Ill probably still try and get there to look around and all if i have the time. So much woods there it has to be worth a look.

Go camping so your not wasting a weekend, fishing tends to be pretty good in some spots. The best deer hunting in the adks is found in the southern foothills, west along lake O and the in the very north along the St Lawarence river. The common denominatior is outside the park.
I know a group of 4 gun hunter, all very good hunters that hunt alomst the whole month of Nov, they avg less then two bucks a year between them and they hunt all day just about daily. One told me he avgs seeing a buck about every 30 hours of hunting, thats just seeing a buck..not nessaraly a shooter.
They all live close to lake George.

Yeah im thinking a camping/fishing trip. So many small lakes and ponds. Ive done a lot of fishing in NY and know these smaller lesser known lakes have to be pretty good. Is it legal to bring a tent and generator out somewhere and just camp alone one of the lakes or should I stick with a camp ground?

You can do both, the state has lots of regular camp grounds tang you bring most anything you want in.... There are also hundreds of state primitive camp grounds off the beaten path that you can hike into.
Some super camping in the Daks

We camped a bunch without issues, but we also take food precautions....bears can be an issue depends on the location. I wouldn't bring a pistol into NY, they are like the gastopo around here and even us residences with full concealed carry permits will get a hard time at times.

I was born and raised up there. Gods country! However if you EVER want to get up there I can point you in the right direction I go up early season every year I have yet to be unsuccessful (doe at minimum) there's a sweet science to the adks but taking deer (even mature deer) is not out of reach. Just takes a LOT of hardwork and a weekend of dedication! Call it a 4 day weekend back it up to black bear season and go for a double whammy!

Thanks man! I might be looking you up. Not sure when, was planning on this year but things keep coming up. Its high on my list, I have spend a decent amount of time up there fishing and driving around and love it. Think it can be a fun place.
