I heard about this yesterday. Minnesota has the potential to be one of the best big buck States out there but it will never happen with our gun season dates and the hunter mentality of a Minnesotan.
Schultzy, I'm just curious what you mean by the hunter mentality comment. As I've mentioned, I've been or if the deer hunting scene for over a decade so I haven't paid much attention.
Minnesota is quite known during the gun season as a brown its down state but yet many of the hunters here ***** we don't have many big bucks as our neighboring states do. Well these same hunters shooting the first buck or deer they see are usually the ones complaining. Last i saw Minnesota is number one in the nation with 75% of the bucks being shot are 1.5 year old bucks. That has to change but I don't ever see it happening hence my comment of the mentality of the Minnesota deer hunter.

new to the forum, and bow hunting, but I know from guys I work with the hastings area has a 4 point, one side restriction, atleast during bow season.
What sort of changes would you propose? I do agree with most of the prior sentiment but do have some dissimilar experiences with hunting parties that I know of locally to the Spicer area. Hopefully when I start scouting this spring I find a few decent sheds. I also am going to be going WAY up north (nearly to the Canadian border) for some early season hunts at some land I have access to from a friend. The lucky part for me is that the land in going to be hunting next season isn't hunted by anyone else at this point. I can only hope there are plenty of deer out there.
I think you may be very disappointed deer hunting in that area. The deer density is very low. But on the bright side the odds are pretty good that you will "get" to see a wolf.
Minnesota has huge potential, and I think there is a very quick way to see that potential. I believe there are two big issues MN has that are preventing seeing a boom of Monster Minnesota whitetails year in and year out. 1. Minnesota is one of the few states that puts firearms in the hands of hunters during the rut. 1a. Two seasons of firearm hunting plus Muzzleloader at the end of it, makes for a full month of November. which means MN hunters have firearms in there hands for the First rut, and the second rut (for the people that see this, I have witnessed it only once but thats not for me to say it doesnt exist). My point is if we move the seasons back, have 1 firearm season and a muzzloader season, we may see the actual potential MN has. That is just my 2 cents
Whoever has been saying minnesota doesn't have big white tails is f ing nuts! I know guys that own a ton of land and manage it for deer and I have seen some of the biggest deer come out of those woods!
