We got this trail cam pic this week in the middle of Wisconsin. Is this a black coyote or a wolf? ImageUploadedByBowhunting.com Forums1455206104.348500.jpg

My guess would be that it is a coyote because of it's thin nose. Wolves have much broader/thicker noses. While it's shoulders are thin too, I have seen young wolves that looked that way. The second animal, in the backround, looks a lot more like a coyote. I haven't seen the two species hanging together. As to it being black, yes those that supposedly know, say that coyotes are mostly greys with mottled patches of brown however my son got a trail cam picture this summer which had a mother and three pups in it and all four of them were black. I saw the three pups, (unfortunately without a weapon) later last summer. I have a coyote pelt in my office that is "golden retriever" blond. So around here coyotes seem to run the full color spectrum as wolves do.

If it was just the black one in front I might think Wolf, but with the 2nd in the back I'm thinking coyote.

Im going with both are coyotes. I am quite sure that coyotes and wolves do not get along together. Also the shape of the black ones face leads me to believe that it is a coyote. I think it may just be shade causing it to be black. Ive had pictures of both on my land and I just dont get the feeling that it is a

Possibly a hybrid or immature wolf. It looks too tall to be a yote to me.

If I had my bow, I know what it would be. Dead is the answer! It is a coyote, I have read that coyotes DNA in the northeast is 22% wolf.

Probably wolf mixed with coyote in many of the northern coyotes. I've shot two that I weighed that were both 58 pounds. The biggest coyote that I have ever seen out west was a 35 pounder. We regularly see coyotes shot around here that top 50 pounds.

It's a wolf, definitely a wolf...I can tell from the number of hairs in the tip of it's tail. Conservation department probably turned it loose.
