I am BRAND NEW to Crossbows.....but damn I got bit hard - last hunt I tried a Ghost 400...I just got a 410 and am putting together a bolt to whack a very annoying and pretty large (4-500 lbs) Black Bear. I've hunted since I was 6 or 7, and hand-loaded since I was 15, I'm 70 now and I want to get in the woods year round with my xbow. I welcome any advice & etc. Never too old to learn. Sarge
Sarge, Welcome to the site. I have not hunted with a crossbow but with your experience you should not have a problem at all. Just remember to take a few pics to share when you whack that bear.
Hi Sarge Welcome to the forum... I, being just a tad shy of 70 am thinking about purchasing a crossbow. The compound I have is nice... but a crossbow sure would grant me the luxury of hitting the game with a little more 'oomph'.
Hey Slugger, sighted the xbow in yesterday (thurs) and went to the "range" today. Barnett lied, they say in the Ghost 410 book it does 357 fps with a bolt/broad-head combined weight of 425 grains. I used a 449 grain combo and the chronograph said it was doin 398 fps! .....That's 24 grains more of payload, 41 fps faster AND 2 more ft. lbs. of energy, OR 151 ft. lbs. as opposed to the 149 they advertise. I believe I have a winner, oh did I mention it gives sub 1" groups. I need someone to get me headed in the right direction to hunt hogs, I'm almost 71 and not as mobile as I was at 30! Sarge
I just got lucky with my cross bow. My nephew let me try a Ghost 400 it was awesome. I did some reading and I now have a Ghost 410 by Barnett. I Paid $749 for it new in the box. I had to mount the scope ( a 1.5 - 5 x 32 ) myself. First bolt fired at 10 yards was 1" off of dead center, the second bolt was next to it. Today I chronographed a hunting weight (449 grain) bolt / broad-head combination. At the "muzzle" the bolt was traveling at 398 fps producing 151 ft. lbs. of KE. If you have the $$ get it you will not be sorry. (it performs better than Barnett's own book says it does, I LIKE that!) Sarge
