Every 6months to a year if you are a target shooter. Every 1 to 3 if you are a Hunter and 3d shooter. and every 2 to 4 if you are a hunter.
Remember strings are made out of plastics and need to be taken care of to last number one enemy is heat.

Depending on the quality, usage and your care, those will determine how long your strings will last.
As to a string breaking. It will not just come back and hit you in the face.
Parts and pieces will be everywhere if that happens.
What would cause you to hit yourself in the face would be a D-loop breaking. Not fun!

Watch those draw length modules, keep them snug with loctite. They have tendency to come loose. But don't over tighten or it'll warp the cam. It happened to me
