Looking to buy my first bow in the spring. There aren't many if any choices in my area (Saint John, NB). They are opening a Cabela's in a couple hours away in Moncton in the spring, but I've been planning a trip to the Portland, ME Cabela's store to do my bow shopping. My question is, with the lack of a "pro shop" in my area, should I get them to set it up at Cabela's? I think I'd trust the portland store that's been there for awhile over a new store in my area
It's really a game of chance with any big box stores. Some guys in the archery depts are good, many aren't. I've had too many issues (mainly @ Gander Mountain) to every trust my stuff to be touched there again. Looks like there's an archery shop in St. Fredericton. I bought my first bow at Cabelas, when I brought my arrows to the local bow shop to get cut the owner looked over my bow. It was shooting straight according to the paper tune, only thing the lads at cabelas missed was my peep they installed it upside down. Needless to say I don't let cabelas even cut my arrows they all go to my local bow shop
The Cabelas here in Sidney, Ne is pretty good with them. I've found if I go in asking for specifics they usually end up doing it better. also ask to watch them work on it. Seems to put them under pressure and makes them work a little better.
Don't trust some small pro shops with my bow, no way I trust a big store with my bow they see and work with way to many people to care about you or you stuff. Just my personal opinion
What about huntersfriend? i've been looking around online and I'll have to pay extra shipping and some duty to get it into canada, but if what they claim is true, the bow should be properly tuned and ready to go when I get it.
To be honest I like hunters friend I would give them a shot but I would call and talk to someone to make sure the specs are right not type it in the computer
^^^They're cool to talk to and don't seem to mess around. I just bought some custom arrows from them and have zero complaints. Looking at buying a bow from them this December.
I'd suggest finding a good bow shop. I had nothing but trouble with my first bow I bought at Bass Pro Shops. Although if you don't have a bow shop near you I'd try to find the most knowledgeable person at the big box store to set it up. DavidS
I don't. I've had 2 bows messed up by Academy and Bass Pro. I will never let someone besides myself ever get a hold of my bow. I might consider it if I knew a guy at a local place.

I don't shoot competitively, right now I don't shoot at all lol But I can totally understand wanting a proper setup on a new bow for a first time shooter. No worse way to start off bad then with a bad bow
I like hunters friend...I have ordered arrows from them twice. They seem to know what they are doing for sure, and the cs that I have experienced has been top notch. Don't know about the bow set up, but they seem real good on other stuff. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It would really depend on the employee setting it up. We had a guy close his archery shop and start working for Gander Mountain and I heard he did a great job. I'm still finding things wrong with my bow set up and I bought it from another archery shop. It's best to just know and understand how your bow should be set up so when you get it you can go over it Kilboars Hunt Club
I wouldn't trust cabelas. I had them cut my arrows for me at beginning of season and there was glue all over my arrow and 2 inserts fell out after a few shots. That was after I let them sit for a week.
As has been mentioned, it depends on the employee doing the work. I've purchased two bows from Cabelas now and don't have any complaints.
