New to bow hunting! What are the critical steps needed to pick a spot to hunt? What scents or covers are preferred? Pretty much everything from start to finish in the field!
I'd suggest picking up a few books given the circumstances. A forum probably isn't ideal as a source of info for someone beginning bowhunting. Anything by Charles Alsheimer is good and I'd recommend watching as many episodes of Growingdeertv.com as you have time for. The QDMA site will also have some useful stuff.
I sort of figured this forum out. I will look for older threads before i ask questions that have been beat to death. Thanks for the advice and the growing deer tv.
Man growingdeer.tv is flat out awesome! I came across those guys before I found Bow hunt or die on youtube. Very insightful especially for new guys like myself, however as good as those guys are having a forum full of experienced bow hunters is equally as awesome. I really enjoy the aspect of bouncing ideas off other people that experience the same things I do/will in the woods!
Welcome to the site! Look through the older threads here for specific answers to certain questions you have. Also, talk to and chat to as many bow hunters here and in person that you meet. ALWAYS wear a Safety Harness! Shoot your bow from an elevated position as much as you can! Buy a Rangefinder with Angle compensation! 1. Look for a deer sign. (Deer trails, scrapes, rubs and ACORNS right now) 2. Find a tree with good cover to breakup your silhouette when you are in the tree. 3. Hunt high and ONLY hunt when the wind is right for that stand. 4 Cover scents are ok. I have had good success with Ever Calm. I have heard good things about Deer Dander too. I hope this helps. I don't usually mind repetitive questions and I don't think most here do either. I just figured with such broad based questions that on a forum you'd get such a wide variety from folks you have no way of knowing who actually knows what...that it'd just be confusing. There are a few guys such as the two I listed that are verifiable and legitimate experts in the white tail world so most anything you learn from them is bankable. As you get some experience under your belt and specific questions become apparent, I guarantee there is plenty of experience and knowledge on this forum (and people willing to share it) to keep you in the proverbial know. Welcome to the forum BTW.
My best advice would be to find some one that can take you under there wing for a season. I learned the basics that way and then just read and read a lot here. You learn to weed out stuff that isn't true. Oh and welcome Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If coyotes are running through you kill them all no question asked. They will make the deer stay away from that area and the will hurt your all around hunting not just morning or night. If you ever see them again kill as many as you can legally
