This will be my first year planting a food plot and couldn't be more excited! My question is what should I use? I have done some research and looked around and I'm baffled at what a bag of food plot seed costs ! What are some cheaper seeds that work and will get me started! Trying to make this food plot for Deer and Turkeys!
Honestly food plotting isn't really cheap depending on just how much effort you want to apply to this. Equiptment and fertilizer, seed, weed killer, gas and time are all a part of it. P.s. DO A SOIL TEST BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ! Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Have had many people tell me the local seed place where the farmers go has the same stuff as the marketed brands.......just much less $. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Soil is good to go! And I'm disking it up with my UTV and ground hog max! Already sprayed and killed the CRP where I want to put my plot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Honestly, clover is about the easiest thing to do and about as cheap as anything if you use medium red. I hope either your CRP contract is out or you got permission from FSA to install a food plot...
CRP contract through FSA is restrictive since it's effectively a lease to the government for set aside. Same here but you typically have to get approval and it often takes a change in the contract.
This. OP, you stated soil is good to go. Does this mean you've made amendments? If not, you really don't truly know if the soil is good to go.
As far as what seed to plant I have had good luck with Frigid Forage whether you choose to go with an anual or a perrenial is up to you. I have had my best luck with Big-n-Beasty from FF. Also might want to check into G2 seeds also. If you don't go those routes I have used stuff from the feed mills, but haven't had the best outcomes.
Anything with a picture of a buck on the package is going to cost you more. Do some research on different feeds. I put clover Red and ladino on one half and alfalfa on the other half. Works pretty good.
Need to know what you are looking to gain from adding a food plot? Are looking to attract more deer to your area all year long, or looking for a plot that will mature sometime during deer season to get deer to use it at a specific time. Do you want something you can put in this year and maintain for years to come, or do you want something you can plant every year or rotate on a yearly basis. Do you already have ag around you that the deer are using as a food source or is it a large hardwood situation What to plant is something nobody can answer with out having all the variable in front of them.
This is why I laugh when I hear complaints about expensive seed.....The seed is one of the smallest expenses...fuel, fertilizer, 4 wheelers, implements, tractors....people will buy all of these but won't pay 5 bucks more a bag for higher quality seed
Yeah because all endorsed products have to be better right? I don't buy that bucks on the package mean higher quality. I buy my seed locally and have had excellent results. I guess I am jaded from all the outdoor advertising that is based on half truths and endorsements.
