Yep, Foxtail. I had a surprisingly difficult time with it this year in one plot even after having rye and clover flourishing. The foxtail came out after mowing this July. Quick spray of seth, and nailed most of it.

    Get rid of it asap.

I'm not making fun; I understand we all come from different areas of the country and plant species vary...but that crap is everywhere in the midwest! Cities, suburbs, field and countryside. I always assumed everyone knew what that is. It's a grass...heck, in some places, it passes for a lawn grass.

No, it is not planted (intentionally, anyway.) I suppose if a farmer baled an entire field of it it could have cross-contaminated his equipment, but I'm not a farmer so maybe I'm way off. I do know that row crops create favorable spaces for it to grow, and it has a late season germination so early season herbicides usually are leached out long before the seeds sprout.

It's not toxic and has some value as forage, but the blades are pretty sharp and can cause cuts in the mouth and on snout so typically it will be avoided by animals.

Yeah I doubt it was planted. It has a hard seed and can survive dormant in the soil seed bank for years and years. It's a pioneer species so any area that's disturbed, it'll be one of the first things nature sprouts up in order to cover bare soil. It's controlled like any other grass species, generic select for selective grass or even roundup as a non-selective spray.
