I don't know the size of the area I'm looking at, but there is an opening in the timber about 40 yards from my stand. I one deer are going by and through there, because I had shots at 3 last year during gun season. Other than clearing a trail to get equipment back there, what all is involved in getting the ground ready for a food plot, and what would've the best option as far as what to plant goes? I've heard clover and turnips is a good combination, but I want to know what has actually worked, not just what sounds like a good idea.

If it helps, I'm in LaSalle county Illinois. The spot sits on top of a ridge that empties down into a creek bed. Creek bed has a few pockets of standing water. There are two bedding areas next to me. One on the other side of the valley to the south of the hilltop, one in the thick brush behind my stand. Haven't done any soil testing yet, but that will come soon.
