How do you guys take out the cut brush? I got a **** ton. We mowed it today with a brush hog that was rented, most of the brush was 5 foot high. Its about an acre plot, was thinking of using a leaf blower to get as much as we can off then just using a lawn mower with a bag? any tips? thanks jimmy.
I don't think a leaf blower will cut it. My reco: Now that you've mowed the plot, spray it right away with RoudUp. Being that it's the middle of summer, in 3 weeks the entire plot will be dead and very dry. At that point, burn it. You'll get down to bare dirt with minimal effort in no time.
Rake. If you have a regular riding mower you can keep going around and discharging towards the outer edge of the food plot. Will take a while and have to go over it a few times but it will be pretty clean once you are done.
You could use your lawn mower like Chuck said. That is how I have mowed my clover plots if the weeds get to high. Also if you had access to a plow you could just clear off what you can and then turn the rest under.
yeah I hear you man, my fear is that roundup wont hit the soil. theres no bare ground at all, I can't burn here either its leased, but thanks for the input!
Roundup really needs to be applied to actively growing grass and weeds. If you have extremely tall weeds, it will not be that effective, so cutting them, removing the duff and waiting a few days to spray would be the best method. I have removed the cuttings with a rear blade on my tractor and the bucket. That's the least labor intensive method I have found.
Hand rake...we've done it....hence why we stay up on mowing them short in the unplanted times of the spring/summer should plots not be spring planted now.
Thanks brother appreciate it, gonna see if the local farmer wants to help out- if not, my silverado may very well be outfitted with a diy redneck solution haha
If you can come across a drag harrow they work pretty well. Just did that in a new plot I am making. Mowed it with a walk behind brush mower, let it set and dry out for a few days then drug it with the harrow. Last year I let them dry then raked them into a pile and burned them. Since you can't burn start in the middle and rake to the edges if you have to.
Ended up getting 2 lawn mowers and doing circles, blowing the clippings outwards. It worked, but its a 1/3rd of the size that we planned haha. Theres still time to get seed in, so I might get a hold of a drag harrow like page said. Thanks -Jimmy
