I'm assuming from what I've read that Crimson Clover is one, but I would like to know some others...Gonna make my own blend up for a late summer early fall plot... It's gonna have Wheat, Oats, Forage Triticale, Frost Master Winter Peas, Diakon radishes, and annual Clovers.<<<<< I need to know some good annual clovers to use with this mix.... Thanks again, I hate to ask all these questions, but I like to know what I'm doing....LOL Thanks Creeks
From what I have found so far annual clovers would be like Crimson Clover and Arrowleaf Clover....Maybe one more to put in the mix...
Am I correct in saying that the Crimson and Arrowleaf also is a Annual Clover, so I could do a combination of the 3 together..Maybe?? Thanks Boonerville
Yes Correct on the Crimson, that is what I'm wanting.....Arrowleaf, Crimson, and Berseem are going to be my 3..... Thanks Boone
A word of advice, if you want the broad leaves to do well in that mix, go light on the grasses. I made the mistake last fall of planting a similar mix and I freaking poured the winter wheat seed on. I have the most beautiful stand of wheat you ever saw but the broad leaves ain't worth a squirt of pee, lol.
Berseem fixates 100-250 units of nitrogen per year, grows fast and tolerates low pH's and wet soils. The deer love it. I sell a semi load of it every year in mixes and cover crop blends. Crimson clover grows a tad slower than berseem, doesn't fixate as much nitrogen but it slightly more cold tolerant and handles drier soils better. Subterranean is more shade tolerant but doesn't produce as much forage. Arrowleaf is ok in the north but more of a southern forage. I have also tested out 4 other annuals that are from new zealand and enjoyed 2 of them but shipping costs and volume isn't there yet.. But my new winner in my test plots is balansa. Yep, more expensive but more cold tolerant and real aggressive after clipping or hard deer consumption.
I am doing some Balansa plots this year. It looks like good stuff, I was looking at bee forages last evening and looked at Balansa closer and put it down on the order for a couple acres.
