Ok so I got my soil sample back and in Feb I dropped recommended amount of lime to bring the PH up. My food plots are kinda small 3/4 to 1/2 and acre. I really want to plant a spring plot but should I just hold off till fall to let the lime work into the soil. If I plant now I kinda want to plant beans realizing that they will get demolished then replant in the fall with oats and clover. Common sense and previous experience tells me to wait but that little voice in my head says plant now!! Thoughts comments.
As long as you can afford to have a regret, I'd listen to the little voice. Experience and common sense are fine and dandy but it gets boring letting them win all the time.
Having money or not I'll let money win every time..... I guess maybe that just means I don't have money!
Plant it plant it plant it!! I would get RR beans then you can keep the weeds out until the fall plot goes in. Plant it plant it plant it!!
Lime works it's way into the soil quickly if that is all that you are worrying about. If you want to watch the beans come up and watch the deer enjoy them and then plant something else later in the summer, go for it.
Thanks for the feedback guys. The property in question is 80% fields and the area has good deer numbers. I just want to increase the draw as much as possible. The plan mostly is to play clover plots mixed with oats, then a few plots of turnips for late winter. Right now I am feeding corn and alfalfa pellets to keep them interested. There are a few oak tress on the place and last year when the acorn crop was low you could tell a difference in numbers. So that my goal feed them and they will come. In a small plot the deer will destroy the beans but thats the point right, keep them interested.. Oh well I'll mull it over a bit more.
It depends on what kind of lime you applied. Dolomitic lime can take up to 3 months to bring the pH level up. Calcitic lime can bring it up in 1 month. So it really just depends...
