Live in SE KY. Did my first food plot this Summer. About 1/2 acre plot with Soybeans. Has had good results I believe. Got already about 4 to 5 different bucks along with does and fawns. Should i till some of the soybeans up to plant some other Fall/Winter food or just let it go since it is going good and should do good deep into the season. Also, got some weeds in with the plot, what do you recommend I spray ? Thanks.
If it's going good I would leave it. You could always broadcast some oats and winter wheat on the plot later if need be to fill it in. Good luck.
Great, what I was needing to know! I'll have to check on the Roundup ready. Got soybeans from local ag store. Appreciate the feedback!
If they are RR beans then spray some plain glyphosate. I'd leave them. Just before leaf drop you can broadcast some seed in them. The leaves will hold the moisture enough that the seeds will germinate.
I agree over seeding is the way to go. Tilling it up will take away some of the winter supply. Overseeding with clover, brassicas, WR, or WW will protect it now with cover from the beans. Will also give you food when the beans die out and then when spring rolls around.
Winter Rye for the win! Although you have enough of a window still to throw brassicas in as well....hang off on the WR till closer to first of September or late September.
I would also advocate overseeding just prior to leaf drop. Nothing at all wrong with having just beans, but from what i saw of SE KY last year elk hunting, the deer may not know what a soybean is. Personally I'd lean towards oats over winter rye, but that is just personal preference. In my experience oats will sprout on concrete, you can plant them in Sept, and deer love them.
I'm in the same boat with the oats over winter rye. Haven't had much luck with the winter rye. I usually put winter peas in with the oats and even add a little wheat to it.
Awesome, thanks for all the feedback. Thinking I will mix some oats and or brassicas. Maybe even some winter rye.
Try broadcasting purple top turnip seed - I've seeded standing corn and the ptt will germinate on top of the soil when conditions are right. -fsh
