Hey All, I planted a Big and Beasty plot in Northern Wisconsin July 9th. I planted last year July 24th and wanted a couple extra week for maximum growth. I hit it with a light dose of Urea August 6th. Check the plots 2 days ago and they're looking good--about 9 inches of growth. First frost is generally 9/15 - 9/22. Question: If i hit it with 1 more light dose of Urea on 8/26, do i risk the plants gettting too mature? Has anyone really tested getting maximum growth out of this blend? There's literally no crop fields in our area so I feel like they'll eat it to the ground either way regardless of the leaves potentially losing tenderness?
planted it for the first time this year and I planted July 23rd. Mine are looking like they shouldn't yellow by first frost but lets hope. Not much help but I am also curious.
Yeah there were just a handful of plants turning slightly yellow so I'm probably going to hit it with urea either way to be safe
Big N Beasty is a great blend. We utilize this blend in many plots. I have planted as early as late June and as late as the last week of August with both having tremendous results. You will not have to worry with planting in July of getting the plants "too mature". The younger plants may be more palatable, but come late season when the frost hits it realistically will not matter to your deer herd. Furthermore the addition of more nutrients will not hurt the plants, but in turn help them gain their full potential faster. I have attached some pics of some of my radish/turnips from these plots and the deer absolutely DESTROYED them!
