Sorry same update post as the wet plot I'm just pumped! It's pretty much beans in our plots from here on out, unreal tonnage! Just a quick update. We ended up prepping close to 7 acres for plots. We didn't worry about the water too much and pretty much just copied Grant Woods methods from Growing Deer TV almost exactly. The biggest difference was we didn't use a grain drill to plant just broadcast at a slightly higher pound per acre. Ended up planting nearly 5 acres (4 plots) in Eagle Seed Large Lad & Big Fellow (RR Forage Soybeans). To say we are pleased would be a huge understatement! A ton of work and lots of credit to my brother who logged a bunch of hours on the tractor. Siill have to get back next month and put in the last 2 acres with our fall blend but hoping that doesn't take near as long since there pretty much prepped. We'll have a bunch more pics and some video soon I hope as we just freshened minerals and put out cams so crossing our fingers for a bunch of deer, a shooter or 2, and 0 yotes would be great!
Beans, Beans the magical fruit. I'm a huge fan of planting soybeans and I have always just broadcast and cultipacked them in with great results. I've never used the Eagle beans, I just buy Ag beans.
We have a decent number of deer but not so many that we were too worried about over browsing. In that type of scenario Grant Woods suggests 50 lbs. per acre drilled or 65-75 lbs broadcast. We ended up using right around 65 lbs per acre.
Last week, my brother posing and the path he bush hogged so we could even walk to the back of the field to access stands. Come on Oct. 1!
Overseed the beans also! When they turn and die what you overseed will take off. I'd recommend either dusting of brassicas or a cereal grain mixture of oats/rye
10-4, won't be there again until next weekend and we're over seeding with eagle seed "Broadside" + some snow peas.
I wish mine looked that good. They eat mine as soon as they get a new leaf. My plants never get over 12 inches high.
This isn't a bad thing though, just means you got a lot of deer for the size of your plot. Some people with the lushest bean plots are solely due to not having many deer utilizing it....and they'd give anything to have deer utilizing more...or more deer period.
This ^. We have a good herd here but nothing crazy. We ended up with 5+ acres of forage beans so that is also helping. The tonnage produced is unbelievable, there are 2 or 3 kind of hidden spots where they are mowing them down all along the edges and first few yards. Really need to get some more cameras in play to get some more intel but I have been swamped with selling a house / buying a house and getting the kids enrolled in new schools. Just happy to have the plots going...unfortunately my vacation time and free time in general look pretty dismal
