Last August I planted a small patch of Whitetail Institute Pure Attraction in the woods. This stuff is supposed to have oats, winter pears, brassicas, and turnips. It grew fairly decent but the deer didn't seem to interested in it until about the end of Nov through the rest of the season here in Pa. Today I went and checked my cameras and I have what looks like possibly oats growing only in the area that I planted. At first I thought it was a weed but didn't find anything that looked like it anywhere except in the patch I planted. The plot was about as full as it got last year and the plants were about 12" tall. Below is a pic of the head of the plant that I am talking about. If this is oats why would it still be growing at this point since I thought it was only a annual planting?
Doesn't look like traditional oats to me, they're usually oriented in a loose spray like pattern in the seed head. I think there's a sea oat with a more wheat like head.
I'm with elkguide and covey. This don't look like oats to me either. I could definitely see it reseeding though. I'm not really sure what kind of seed head that is.
Many of the "newly modified" plants produce some different plants the following year, so this could be some of that. Just don't know.
Well after some research, I have to agree it sure does look like the Spring Green Rye. I'm not sure if that is something that was part of the WI Pure Attraction mix or not. So should I leave it bee until I want to plant something new in August or cut it down now? I don't really know anything about rye.
As long as it's not over powering what you want to grow there then dont worry about it...the deer will gobble up the rye shoots along with everything else Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
Oats hang wheat and rye point up. It may have been seed left over or nocked of oats from last yr if is growing again and u didn't plant its called volunteer lol. Nothing wrong with that free seed. If u don't want it in food plot now it now or just keep feeding them deer
