I am looking at creating a screen on 1 side of my Brassica Blend plot. I want this screen to also benefit as food as well. Thinking that a mix of grain and forage Sorghum will give me cover as well as food. The screen needs to be around 6-10 feet tall or taller. Any advice or knowledge on what to use would be awesome. Open to other seed as well. Do not want to do corn. I have to broadcast the seed. Thanks!
Rick, I was told a grain Sorghum will grow shorter than a forage Sorghum. Do you know what brand/type you used and what you would recommend? Thanks
I will be planting sorghum for a screen as well. Southern States has a 220 sorghum slower growing and higher as I understand the info that I am going to try this year
Just remember the Egyptian Wheat is not a food source, while the heads on the Sorghum are. So all depends where this screen line is. Along a road, I wouldn't use Sorghum, as I don't want deer attempting to feed by a roadway. Inside the property lines for edges, plot separations and such either or a mix will work great!
Its basically to block off the neighbors view into my plot. He's way to nosy of a neighbor and really fed up with him shooting into my plot with his ground blind set up on the edge of the plot. So hopefully a tall crop at that end of the field will keep him out. Its only about a 1 acre plot with the only food in the area so I need to maximize the food in the 1 acre. I think I will go with a mix of Sorghum and Egyptian wheat. Thanks for the help. Prayin for rain!
Have some of ours it has been a mist light rain everyday for almost 2 weeks not the kind of weather we need around seeding.
Egyptian wheat grows to about 14 ft tall but don't get it to thick or it will just blow over flat in the winter. Mix it with some shorter sorghum mixes for thick cover.
