I have three bow hunts in the books. A moose hunt the first week of October in Newfoundland an then three weeks of whitetail hunting in November in Kansas and Ohio. That leaves me with all of September !! Here is my plan state by state, it's been pretty similar the past few years mostly points but I look to draw a longer shoot tag and if not then I fill in with an OTC and or general tag. I keep dreaming of a Lower 48 big horn tag. No longer putting in for any goat tags, most likely booking hunt in Canada to get a goat. Alaska: no draws Arizona : I will have shot at an elk tag, everything else is extremely unlikely. Putting in for Elk, lope, deer, and both Desert and Rocky Mt Big Horn. California: no draw Colorado: Mule Deer and Elk, will be points only Idaho: Rocky Mt bighorn Iowa: point Kansas: Whitetail in unit 7 or 8 Kentucky: Both Bow and Rifle elk tags Maine: Moose unit 7 Montana: Big Horn in the breaks, points for Moose Nevada: Both Sheep tags New Hampshire: Moose New Mexico: no draw Oregon: no draw Pennsylvania: Elk Texas: DesertBig Horn of course!! Utah: Both Big horns, moose, bison, mule deer, elk ..all points Vermont: moose both tags Washington: Both Sheep Wyoming: points, elk, deer, lope, sheep, moose Fingers crossed for a sheep tag!! Or a long shot elk tag!
Wow! That is quite the plan! I am busy planning for one trip next season! I envy you and look forward to retirement!!
Illinois. I'll be changing things up again with all new leases. I'll be targeting Fulton County but will also be looking hard in Jo Daviess again as well. There is a chance I'll also do something in Kansas this year, and I'll likely buy a point in Iowa. It's hard to not put 100% into whitetails right now with the quality of hunting I've got within a few hours drive.......so I won't be pursuing anything else.
Otc Colorado elk for the last week of September. Might try to make it a 2 week trip. If it stays as a 1 week hunt I may try for an antelope hunt or possibly do another elk hunt. Not sure yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm moving to AZ this spring so my app strategy is changing. Az - Across the board New Mexico - Sheep, Elk, Antelope, Ibex, Oryx Nevada - Sheep and muleys Utah- Sheep, Elk, Deer, Bison, Moose, Montana - Sheep in the breaks Idaho - Sheep Wyoming - Speed Goats points only Maine and NH - Moose SD - Points for deer and antelope and apply for Custer Bison
I seen some decent lopes this fall in SD, kind of made me wish I had a tag. Any way a couple were better then I expected.
I've archery hunted there every year for 5 years and seen some pigs, I had a Rifle tag in my pocket last year and couldn't make the trip out so I'd like to get another shot.
Yea, I hear you. Hoping that the change in the archery deer season goes through to Sept like it's been talked about. That will be a game changer and put SD on a lot more radars
I'm planning on hopefully diving in this year more. Apply in Arizona for elk, mule deer, and sheep. I may add Utah to this list also...TBD My hunt plans depend on my employer. I interviewed for a dream job recently and every day I don't get a rejection letter is a step closer. If I get it, I may look into an OTC Black Bear in Idaho if the time frames align. May be wishful thinking though.. If I stick where I'm at, this should be a fun year for hunting if it all plays out. A 16 day off block in September to head to Colorado for elk, mule deer, and maybe black bear if I can get it finalized before the deadline to apply. December in Arizona chasing Coues again. Had a blast doing it this year. The one given will be chasing Illinois whitetails! Sent from my LGLS991 using Tapatalk
Utah is really a bargain, the lic is like 65 and each app is like 10 per species. It pays to apply across the board. If your going to buy a CO lic you should probably put in for your first choice a unit that you can't draw then you can put your second choice as your general/OTC unit. Your paying the money for the lic so you might as well grab a point in the process.
Hoping to get back in our Kansas lease, Thinking about doing a early season Kentucky whitetail hunt, and we will probably head back to texas. Oh yea and hunt behind the house lol
