Well the toms haven't been too cooperative here. They're almost always in the company of hens and its been tough sledding for the most part.

I got busted by a jake the other morning... he came in behind me, the leaves were wet and I had no idea he was there until he stepped off to my left at a mere 10 yards. He saw me the same time I saw him. Game over. I wasn't going to kill him anyway, but just didn't want him making a racket in the area.

Last night, I figured I try an evening hunt since I don't have a whole lot of experience with hunting until dark for turkeys. PA just started allowing us last year to hunt all day the second half of the season.

Again.. I had a turkey sneak right in behind me and spook. No idea what it was, but it caused a helluva commotion blowing out of there.

Just not my year so far.. Oh and this evening hunting crap is strange.. I was in the woods till almost 9PM last night... LOL

So Monday my godfather from KY is flying in for a week of turkey hunting. This will be beyond special for me! As a young teenager I lived with him for some time and he taught my invaluable lessons, on life, women, the woods, deer hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, you name it. I truly would not be the man I am today if it weren't for him. Since those years as a teenager life in general has prevented us from spending much time together in the woods. In fact we have only shared one day afield since! A week together with him killin turkey and fishing is really a dream hunt for me (even though I am tagged out and will really be playing guide) He isn't as young as he used to be and hard to say how many more opportunities like this I will have with him. (tearin up sheesh) So out of anticipation I am starting this thread today and will be posting updates of our time together throughout the week (hopefully to include some dead turky pics!) Monday can't get here soon enough!!!!!!!!

We had been planning a day of turkey hunting for a while now up here in Michigan. Allen wanted to start his hunting career (at the age of 8)....hunting turkeys!! We spent a little time trying to show him how the .410 shot gun and even a light load in the 20 gauge would not hurt him but he wouldn't have anything to do with that. Just too soon for him I guess so we elected to start practicing with the crossbow. He quickly showed dad he wasn't messing around and was consistently hitting the mark out to 20 yards. So, we decided that was plenty good enough, all we had to do was get a turkey close enough. Many of you know how difficult that task can be!!

Friday evening, after Allen's Little League game where his team put a whoopin on the only undefeated team in their league, we headed up to my buddy Ed's place to spend the night. He had scouted out a couple of the farms he had access to and went ahead and set up a pop-up ground blind for us. Saturday morning we got up at 4 am and headed over to the farm, along the way Allen was studying the turkey pictures I had on my phone and showing me where he would aim for every angle and situation. He was right on and soon we arrived in that early morning darkness.

Excited was an understatement for me and I only hoped Allen got to experience some of what we all dream about for turkey season. We made our way out to the blind and Ed set the decoys up within Allen's range. Soon all 3 of us were settled in the blind waiting for daylight to come. Just before sunrise we heard our first gobble!!! Allen couldn't believe it and it seemed like he was less than 100 yards away. Soon we heard more gobbles from different birds! Allen's excitement started to grow and now it was daylight! The gobbles continued here and there, especially any time the crows would sound off. Our excited anticipation started to grow into wonder, if anything would even show for us.

Suddenly Ed motioned that he spotted 2 jakes coming our way. Thinking they were across the field I started remind Allen how to be safe, to breathe and to squeeze the trigger. Little did I know they were mere feet from the blind!! Thank goodness I didn't spook them and as they slowly worked their way around to the decoys they cam into view for Allen to see!! I could see the nervousness in his legs and hands but as the slowed down around the jake decoy I whispered 'the one on the left, wait til they stop'. Sure enough, the one on the left stopped and Allen sent the bolt on it's way....smack right where he should have been aiming!!! The turkeys took off running and soon Allen's bird tipped over along the way!! HE WAS DOWN!!! ALLEN DID IT WITH A CROSSBOW!!!

I owe it all to this man for making it happen for Allen!! Thanks again Ed!!

Here is where it get's a familiar twist to the story.
We sat for a little while before deciding it was time to go and get a bite to eat, a celebration breakfast for Allen. All morning Ed and I kept looking back at Allen, both of us with that happy grin that Allen actually got it done! Breakfast entailed us re-living the story and even Allen's Little League game from the night before. My dreams had come true and these moments are what I have only hoped for!! We had a great meal at the local diner and soon we were headed back to the farm to sit for a while and see if good ole dad could make something happen. We made our way back to the blind around noon and decided we would sit til between 3 & 4.

It didn't take long for Allen's adrenaline rush to turn into complete exhaustion. We hadn't been in the blind long before he was out cold.

A little after 2 Ed notices 2 jakes headed our way. They fed a while before noticing the decoys set up and soon they were on their way. Could this actually happen again?!?! My heart was racing and the turkeys were within range. I only needed the one to take a few more steps into the window I had open. Nope, the one decided to turn and didn't like things as it walked quickly away. The second one paused long enough for me to stand and switch windows. As he stepped out Ed hit the call and made him stop. I settled the dot on him and thwack the bolt drilled the jake where I was aiming!! Soon he was running and eventually tumbling out in the field as well!!! We did it!! Allen shot his first and I was able to complete the double!!!

Ed, I simply cannot thank you enough and I am glad you were there to enjoy the moments with Allen and I!!

My daughter came up from California and wanted to go out with me. We sat up, called for an hour or so and didn't hear anything. At the end of the property im on we heard kids screaming, dogs, lawn mowers and some guy yelling for some one. I told her lets move farther down field. Once we sat back up, not ten minutes later, one fires off right behind us, he came within 20 feet, never payed any attention to the decoys but was behind a tree, no shot. Had I stayed there, dead bird. Try again today before she goes home tomorrow, but pretty nasty out.

I usually don't get frustrated with turkey hunting as I love it. But man, the first couple weeks of season have been odd for me. Turkeys are very vocal, will gobble all morning long, but will not commit to the call. Now, I realize the first few weeks in PA usually see toms henned up and their very reluctant until later in the morning if the hens separate.

However, this morning... baffles me. I saw or heard three different toms that had no hens with them. One in particular came within 70 yards this morning, by himself and hung up after seeing the deke. I had a bird directly behind me gobbling like crazy and was pinned down. I am pretty sure the bird right behind me was close enough to kill, but I was afraid to move with the bird lurking in front of me. Then at 11AM, I had a very vocal bird come within 70 yards, gobble his head off, then leave. He had a hen, but I accidentally kicked the hen when sneaking in to setup on him. He continued to gobble his head off at anything I through at him. Then, like a switch, he started walking away, gobbling the whole time.

I'm sort of at a loss. These things have been happening all season for me. Birds will gobble on their own, some come half way then walk away gobbling, or their henned up and won't gobble at all.

I know, its turkey hunting. I know thats part of the game, but I just had to vent a little. The tom that I had going at 11AM today really bothers me. I did it all right I think. He was by himself, vocal, and I was in a very favorable position for him to come in.

I'm beginning to hate turkeys... LOL

Turkey hunted today for the first time in the spring. Saw a lot of crazy stuff. Watched a hen that was by herself come into a corn field and start rolling around and kind of pushing her wings to the ground and just made a lot of weird movements. She did this for probably a half of an hour. She had all kinds of toms around her by the time she was done and then walked off with them. At first I though she was making a nest or maybe it was part of the turkey rut, but I really have no idea. Watched some toms fight and run off jakes. Pretty cool stuff, have been around them deer hunting, but have not seen a show like that before. We have a trail camera set up at the blind and will post some good pics later tonight in the trail camera forum. Didnt get a shot but saw alot of birds and am going to try it in the morning.

Also, the birds are plentiful in the area, lot of gobbling and know where they (should) will come from. Should I continue being 50 to 200 yards from the birds or try to move in closer. They would gobble back at the calling, but not come close enough. Had 2 jake and two hen decoys, should I change this? Lastly my dad and I were in a blind together and think splitting up for when they fly out of the trees in the morning might be best. No clue though. Long time deer hunter, 1 day turkey hunter needing help. I am cheating using my gun, with a 30 yard range(what I practiced, no further).
