One of the old brassica plots from last fall. It will be planted in oats and red clover soon and tilled under for the winter rye mix in the fall. After a heavy dose of fly this weekend... ;)

Last fall we planted a clover mix that included rye grass in this plot. Will definitely be mowing this plot soon. A lot of great clover underneath that ugly rye grass.
4 Men guilty of deer poaching

Published 7:08 AM CDT May 19, 2013

Four men from Louisiana men have been found guilty of poaching deer in southwest Iowa.

The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that Michael Fralick, of Ponchatoula, La., was recently convicted of 32 counts of deer hunting violations in four southwest Iowa counties.

Fralick was ordered to pay nearly $29,000 in fines, court costs and damages and forfeit two rifles. He also received a five-year license suspension.

James Moore, also of Ponchatoula, pleaded guilty to 11 counts. He was ordered to pay nearly $12,000 and has a five-year license suspension.

Stanley Russel, of Roseland La., and William "Heath" Chambliss, of Kentwood, La., were also convicted of several counts and ordered to pay more than $1,400 each. Both received a two-year license suspension.

The four also face hunting counts in Kansas.

Here is my observation and wonder if anyone can shed some light on this. Why is it that nearly every time someone around here from out of state gets caught poaching they are from the south? We had a group in town two years ago that were camping in a state forest here in an RV, using ATV's and rifle hunting deer (rifles are illegal during regular season) and they killed over their limit. They did not even have deer tags or a hunting license! They too were from Lousiana. They lost everything they had with them including their RV, ATV's, weapons and hunting boots when they got caught. It is a real problem in Iowa. The majority of nonresident violators are from Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. Is it a cultural thing? Are there just that many rednecks down there that dont give a crap about game laws? Is poaching in the south just a way of life? Our game officers even admit that they have a better than average chance of writing tickets to anyone from the south. I dont want to paint with too broad of a brush because I know there are many upstanding sportsmen and women from the south, but you sure seem to have a lot of scumbags too. What gives?

Went out for my third time ever yesterday afternoon with friends from work (went once last year, and once three years ago). I'm borrowing my father-in-laws clubs for long term (he doesn't play much and just said to hang on to them). I have ZERO experience or instruction (or skill for that matter:D). Most of the guys I was with were not great (only one is a solid shooter), and it was also my first time playing a scramble/best ball format. Long story short, while I hate some of the things you have to wear (something about playing a sport in a polo), I don't really seem to hate the game (minus how long it takes to play 18), but in all honesty, I'm BAD. I made some cool/lucky shots, and some solid drives, but there were way more bad things than good.

I can't loft with a wedge to save my life.
I can only hit my 5 iron somewhat consistently...all other irons I seem to top the ball.
I can't hit my driver well (too much flex I was told by the guy playing with us who has a lot of experience), so I'm left hitting my 3 wood even in situations where we had a 587yd Par 5.
I can putt decently, but in all honesty, decent in my mind is probably horrendous by most other standards

It's a fun sport, but I'm not sure I have time/money to dedicate to another hobby, especially since I think I would tire of playing being as bad as I am.

All in all, it was a good day, but I'll take hunting any day:D

Disclaimer: I'm working on a solution to help in the process but was curious to hear what others are using. I haven't found anything that I really like.
