Looking at getting a lantern and don't know a thing about them. Have an old 4 D battery Coleman that quit working and would like to replace. Propane? Rechargeable? Battery? Brand? Used mainly for backup light in case power would go out but also be used on occasional hunting trips. Have a bass pro gift card that I would like to use it on and we don't have any around here so it's all online shopping.
I have a Coleman battery light with a florescent bulb-not very bright, and generally a weak option, but it was free for me, great battery life and no fumes. In an emergency a head lamp and a gallon jug of water works too. ~Bill
I can't say I've had good lucking with battery powered lanterns. Propane to me is no fail. Just need to keep an extra cylinder on hand and some mantles. Also is a great heat source in a pinch!
Propane by far. When you get extra mantles get the "gold" they cost a little more but are much stronger.
Never had a problem running them in a fishouse, or in an outhouse, if it is a concern go with propane
They put out a ton of heat and yes they burn oxygen. As long as you are not in a confined space it is fine. Just use common sense. It would be just like using a propane heater inside. The propane lanterns work exactly the same but just use a different fuel.
I know that, they burn fuel too. People have different perceptions. They run propane or NG in forklifts designed for indoor work so some people may think propane is safer. I would go with the gas myself they seem to put out more heat than a propane lantern.
I feel that both the white gas and the propane put out the same heat out put. I do think its easier to mount a heat shield to the propane than the white gas. Actually I need to put a rebuild kit in my white gas lantern and stove, might convert the stove over to propane. The big advantage with white gas is, The propane lantern when its 20 below the 1lb cylinders don't last as long as they do when its warmer. Do to the propane changing back over to a liquid instead of a gas. That's wear a white gas shines. Beefie
And.......... you can carry a gallon tank of white gas and have a lot more energy in a small package and not have to throw away the propane tanks all the time. And if you need to, reg unleded gas will work in them as well.
You can refill the little 1lb cylinders as well. There is a few you tube videos and write ups on how to do this. But yes with the Coleman white gas lantern it is a dual burner with the white gas or gasoline. I have both lanterns so its what I feel like carrying at the time, the white gas has a wider base so its easyer to stand up all the time. the propane has the snap on plastic bottom base and I have had that fall off while blood trailing deer thru the prickly ash. trying to figure out a way to incorporate it into my heat shield so it cant come off.
