I want to upgrade now my hunting camo and I shoot Mathews and I have been looking at the Lost camo series. Any other good camo patternes?
i've given up on buying the latest/greatest camo. when i got back into longbow hunting, i wanted to see if i could hunt in jeans and a plaid flannel. lo and behold, i got a wise, old doe. i'm not saying concealment isn't important. i just don't feel like spending money to change out my camo, especially when my old one's still do the trick. that said, the predator and optifade look really nice. it kind of reminds me of my military camo, where it's not about looking like a tree but breaking up your outline properly.
for the record, i don't hunt in that normally. i don't wanna roll the dice all the time. i use my old hunting camo and/or my unserviceable uniforms for hunting now. it's lasted me a long while and allowed me to buy other stuff =)
For me upgrading camo is less about the pattern, and more about the material it's made from. Trying to replace the old school cotton six-pocket pants now for something that if wet will whick moisture and dry faster. Also, more breathable and insulating. Just my two cents!
I use real tree AP or Mossy oak breakup and I only get new stuff when the old ones wear out. I agree that buying equipment that help you succesfully bag game, such as rangefinders, lighter stands, better arrows or bow, are more important that new camo patterns. I will say that a good scent Lok suit is a must have for anyone wanting to regularly bag mature prey.
Camo pattern I'd recommend an open pattern. Predator camo, Kuiu Vias, Vertigo type patterns to name a few. The old flannel is a open pattern. Look at camo from 20 yards, most popular brands loose all detail and simply look dark.
ASAT. I haven't found a better pattern. It doesn't try to blend in with anything...it's only purpose it to break up the human outline and it does that extremely well.
I love my lost camo suits, but when I'm not wearing those I'm wearing realtree suits. I like these two camo patterns most.
I looked into optifade..but I wasn't sure how I would like Sitka gear and didn't want to spend that much for something I couldn't check out in person. A buddy of mine bought some of the sitka gear in optifade open country. A couple of weeks ago we went shed hunting and he had the jacket and pants on and I could easily spot him no matter where he was..not even trying. He stuck out like a sore thumb in the terrain we where in. He commented on my ASAT vest and said that all he could see of me at any given time was my head and arms..I had a black hat and black base layer shirt on.
i like the optifade because it reminds me of my normal work camo. asat is good too, definitely one of the best out there even though i didn't mention them, but i think that most camo clothing works really well if they can break up a person's outline. i've been on the side of a grassy hill wearing my multi-cams and still got deer. most of what i was saying was i de-emphasize the pattern and really emphasize other aspects of hunting, like playing the wind, placement, etc.
I got the Gamehide Gridlock suit this past season and I really loved it. Warm and soft but not super bulky!
