First accident I've ever had except for a little string slap when firsr learning how to shoot.
Buddy and i were out at the cabin primarily to hunt rabbits, but took a little time to shoot our bows.
Each take about a dozen shots at 20, back to 30 shoot, back to 40.

Buddy takes 1 shot, then i put an arrow on my resr, attach release (hot shot vaper 4) and start to pull back. Not taking it very seriously im talking while pulling back and all the sudden BANG, my release goes flying who knows where the arrow is or if it exploded or what. I stand there for a second then my chest has this pretty sharp pain, spot of blood on my white shirt.

    No puncture wound, thank God.

Here is what I think happened, not paying attention i didnt have a grip on my release and it slipped from my fingers still attached to dloop, arrow launched to wherever i happened to be pointed at at the time. The release smacks into the rest bouncing back and.flying a good ways before hitting a tree, my right hand flys back and i punch myself in the chest breaking my skin and making my bleed.

After a minute or two of standing there like WTF happened, pick up my stuff and we walk to get buddies arrow and the target.

On the plus side of this, i found my arrow, actually almost hit the target, only missed by like 5 feet.

Now when you pull the thumb release it makes a ting sound.
Wonder if i bent something internal.

I've punched myself in the mouth at least two or three because of a worn d-loop slipping through a caliper release.

I know "a guy" who did something similar - let his release go while drawing back. Unfortunately for him he ended up with a broken finger. Sounds like you got off a lot easier.

    Glad you're okay!

Glad you are ok. I've done that same thing once or twice in my lifetime. I didn't let go of the release but I accidentally hit the trigger and I set them very light. Luckily no serious damage but as a result I always point my arrow to the dirt when I draw just in case.

This is why every release should have a wrist strap.

Thumb release without a strap is more convenient in the tree and helps me keeps my wrist warm.

This kind of stuff keeps happening ill be switching back to my old release with a strap

That's like saying every baseball bat should have a strap on it. Use it the right way and don't let it go and you'll be fine. Millions and millions of arrows are launched from bows every year using handheld releases without an issue.

Do you wear gloves and safety glasses when you shoot your bow?

Likely would have prevented this incident.

Thousands of hunters climb into trees without a harness or lifeline each year without incident. Yet I am fairly certain that if you could you would make it so everybody did. Accidents happen and the more we can prevent the better.

Everybody makes mistakes or has "accidents" at some point. It matters little that you made a mistake and had an accident. What matters is what you as a person do after the mistake to not repeat the error.

I recently got a hot shot vapor 4 used Me not thinking didn't tighten up the tension before hand. I go to draw and the trigger releases from the draw weight. Punched myself in the mouth dropped my bow and cut my cheek a little. I emailed the person I got it from turns out it was a woman that shot about 35 lbs so she could get away with a hair trigger setting. Idiot moment.

Contact Hot Shot and explain what happened.....they are a pretty good operation. Probably want you to send it back to be inspected, which might be wise since it slammed into your rest......which was much better than the back of your bow hand by the way. If there is something wrong with it to make a noise, it is better to have it checked out than repeat the fiasco with possibly worse results.

Ok...so this is not a scientific response...but everyone always has, at some point, an issue or injury, and that's always something that happens even to the most seasoned archers. You've got great info from many seasoned archers...go for it!

Had the same thing happen a month ago with a Truball Max 4. Release smashed into the QAD rest on my 2 week old Elite. Luckily only cosmetic damage.
