when you shoot as many deer as he does its probably hard to keep all the tags straight.

He has 100% owned it. Unlike most have done when caught. Seems honest mistake...but a mistake nonetheless and he has owned it.

This isn't a Spook Span or Marc Anthony deal to me seams like an honest mistake. Too bad some others that film for tv and DVD that are doing way worse **** than that trying to hide it!

I love all of the online toughguys and haters that come out of the woodwork for something stupid like this. Bunch of jackwagons.

Lee is a stand-up guy and stuff happens. I know people who have mistakenly used their either-sex tag on a doe instead of their antlerless tag, then not realized it until it was on the deer and it was called in. While not illegal, it shows how mix-ups can happen. I'm sure he grabbed a tag without double-checking which one it was, put it on the deer, then called it in which flagged their system that something was wrong. Honest mistake, he pays a little fine and life goes on. IMO it's really a non-story.

I have been very close to making the same mistake. We can get a lot of tags, especially as a land owner. If you are trying to thin does, can get three buck tags, and have landowner and statewide tags for multiple seasons and weapons, it can get confusing. I have grabbed the wrong tag before and started peeling the back before realizing I had the wrong one. Its not like he didn't have plenty of the correct tags to use. He simply grabbed the wrong one and paid for a simple mistake. I bet he will check, and double check the tags going forward and never make the same mistake. By the way, its a common mistake to make here and in no way means he was trying to get away with anything. He didn't even fill all of his buck tags for that year. To even bring it to public attention is kind of a petty and jealous move in my opinion. Moving on.

I just don't see this as a big deal at all. If he were doing it to gain an advantage or scam the system then I would be all over him for it. I'm fairly certain this wasn't the case. All accounts are that the Lakosky's are law abiding citizens and terrific stewards for the outdoor's industry. Standing up and admitting the mistake and accepting the punishment shows a lot about his character.

Yup it isn't like Spook that used an illegal tag on a deer which he didn't have a tag for. Lee's situation was merely grabbing tag "x" instead of "y" which he had both.

I called an archery deer in a few years ago that I mistakenly tagged and checked in with a firearm permit. Both were OTC and I wasn't paying attention. Did this on a Saturday and had to wait until Monday to call in. Kept waiting for a warden to show up or something.

Finally got ahold of them Monday and we switched all the information around to the correct permit numbers and reactivated the firearm permit over the phone.

Said it happens all the time

Kinda ****ty how society loves when someone else's messes up. This instance really is annoying because it's hunters preying on hunters.

In order to critique someone's mistake I hope (you) have always done everything 100% by the book. Glass houses people, glass houses.

It got flagged because he checked it in. That aligns with the story it was a mistake. His reply on Facebook is very classy just speaks to his character which is solid in my eyes. Sadly enough if this was an ordinary person no news release would have been released. Pretty crappy on Iowa DNR for doing that. Yeah its all public record at the end of the day but still.
