What's a good turkey decoy.

Will be my first year turkey hunting. I want to try it with my bow. Was wondering,
A. What style turkey decoy? /Jake,hen or Tom.
B.brand? Was suggested a avian on a other forum but would the MAD decoys be good also?
Seeking advice from guys that hunt them with a bow.still not sure yet on what broadheads I'll be using. Either Magnus bullhead or a expandable.

Avian x a hen and a jake for me the first week. After that deeks don't work so good in my area those thunder chickens wise up

 

DSD ... buy the Jake and thank me later. Put any hen you want with it, because all the birds key in on is that Jake.

I have the avian x decoys myself and that is what I use now when I put decoys out. I have the jake and the hen decoy. Sometimes they work and sometimes turkeys get nervous when they see them. They are cautious birds

 

If you are planning on using Magnus bull heads be prepared to do some bow tuning. It is actually I really good way to tune your bow those BH are so big anything but a perfect tune will lead to you missing by feet. Watch some videos of how to use a pillow as a target.

DSD, expensive, but I would by them again. I use the breeding pair. Last season I had to scrub mud off of the hens back three times. I noticed a big difference in the bird response to them over my old cheap "Walmart specials".

Avian look good. DSD looks the best.

 

DSD hen. You can use a jake if you want but I have seen Jake deeks scare Tom's off.

 

Every pack comes with a DVD that I produced and steps you through setting up for shooting Bullheads. You can also view these on the Magnus YouTube channel.

If you ever have questions let me know. It is not tough at all to get them to fly if you follow all of the steps.

 

took an 18 pound turkey last fall with slicktrick standard. worked great. the videos of the large broadheads taking off turkey heads looks impressive but think a normal fixed blade provides more flexibility for a variety of shot opportunities.
as for decoys for spring turkey, I have a couple less expensive basspro hen decoys and usually end up with a few hens coming in an feeding around them. its pretty thick where I hunt so I'm not trying to draw gobblers in from a long distance by sight.

 

The advantages of the Bullhead is that the bird is either dead where you shoot him or unharmed if you miss and the head/neck is a larger and more conspicuous target than the bird's vitals. I don't spend a lot of time trying to tune so that the Bullhead flies good out to 40 yds. I save myself the trouble and just work birds in to 10 or 15 yds. When you smack one in the head with the Bullhead, it's makes a wicked thwack. If you go with the Bullhead, buy the package head/arrow deal that Magnus sells.

 

I have used turkey decoys since the first ones were brought to market. You absolutely cant beat Avian-X. Soft, quiet, collapsible, and look good enough to fool ANY turkey.

 

I like the Avian X Laydown hen and their Jake decoy.

Once you smash a gobbler with a Bullhead you will be hooked. I decapped a double opening morning last year. My KS tags were filled within 30 minutes of daylight. Soooo much fun!
