Headed out today to the local public land area I've tried hunting last year and this with no success so far. Only have my doe tag left and my normal spot is Buck Only. Last year, the weather didn't help for late season because the area got flooded and frozen so I couldn't get to this area. Couple days ago, I strapped on the snow shoes and broke the main trail. Today, put them on again and dragged my stand, sticks, bow and warm clothes in on a sled. Took about 45 minutes to walk in through the snow cover. One heck of a workout for my out of shape self. Next trip in will be easier as I get the trail packed better. The spot is a low spot that is frozen over, can see where a deer has broken through the ice probably a day or two ago. The opposite bank is about 15 yards from the tree I setup in, so I can brush a couple openings on the opposite side to give me 20-25yard shot should something walk through. There is another crossing area out of the picture to the left.
I hunt public land a lot. I noticed the deer like to travel right on the walking path I walk to my stand to when a lot of snow has came and I've walked on it. I'll hunt one day after a snow and when I come back the next day or 2 the deer had all mostly walked on my path. So I purposely made a few paths going by my tree at like 10-15 yards and deer would come by in light and take those paths and give me perfect shots. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Cool place...whyohwhy does WI end their season on Jan 8 (Friday)? If they just stretched it thru the weekend I could get one more trip in. Oh well...
